I will be down the 25th - 8/1. I was curious about what you can collect from the water, if you can collect from the waters and if you can colllect where to collect?

Not looking for anything in particular, just something that might catch my eye and I could put in my system, might even be mangroves.

Also, what are some good LFS?

thanks

Rich

I think mangroves might not be allowed w/out a permit...something about them being endangered? this is just what i've heard from people about 10 years back, but As far as stuff you can collect, you can collect just about anything...its just a matter of whats legal lol. You'll have to check florida's fish and game regulations. Just google it and i believe theres a big PDF file with all the regulations. Most stuff isnt worth keeping, (besides fish) unless you go and dive cause alot of seaweed is dead and is just washed up. But fish can be difficult to transport. And for hte LFS, i personally (and the majority of the people on this board) like Finz, which is located in tampa, on dalemabry and Kennedy, And FAOIS (Fish and other ichthy stuff) located in oldsmar. Check on the main tampa bay reef club official site and theres a local fishstore list. Make sure you call FAOIS and get directions cause mapquest directions are wrong.

What have you seen in the local water, fish wise? If I can get it in a net, I can get it home.

drag nets are nice....just be aware that it can deplete our shores...but i've seen flounder, seahorses, puffers, jelly fish, all sorts of stuff.

I tried to look at the Fish and wildlife manual, 435 pages of important yet mind numbing info about location of bays and in the bay and etc. etc.

I am not looking to collect 50 seahorse or puffers, maybe 1 or 2 for myself, if Legal, and put them in my tank and take care of whatever.

Is it legal to use a drag net? if so what would be a good place to try to use a net?

I just got back from a week vacation 5 miles south of where you are and that thread shows some of what we caught. How long are you there? I'm tempted to go back down. It's about an hour south of where I live.

g/l and let me know if you catch anything

OH YEAH...if you find seaweed floating...grab a kid's bucket and scoop the whole thing from underneath real fast. Then pick up the seaweed and shake it. I'd say there is a juvenile fish under every 5th piece of seaweed. After a while, your eyes will adjust and you'll see which ones have a little fish or something before you even scoop :) I don't keep most of what I catch, but I could just catch with the kids all day long to see what's out there.

...and don't take all of our sand dollars ;) They are at that sand bar in the masses at low tide!
