Vaseline on impellers?

I have heard that putting a very thin layer of vaseline on the impeller of in line pumps and power heads would help prevent calcification and wear on the pumps. Just wondering if anyone else has had success with this or if anyone feels it would cause a problem in the tank?

I would not put any petroleum product in my tank. Maybe inert silicone lube would work, like the stuff they use on o rings.

That wouldn't make any sense as it would be quickly stripped off of the impellar since it is moving quickly.
