velvet timeline

I'm hooked
quick question regarding timelines, i can't seem to find the exact answer to this

at what point after purchasing a fish from a lfs can you rule out velvet? i know some fish can have temporary immunity against ich but velvet seems to be a quick & sneaky killer and TT does nothing for it.

If a fish is purchased from an LFS running a low level of copper, from my experience it will show up around 3-4 weeks. Earlier if you know how to read behavior. Six weeks would be safe for sure (velvet not ich).

Thank you!

and how about a fish that has never been exposed to copper? (getting a fish directly from the lfs source in a bag before it touches their system)
we dont have any good online vendors in canada, the best we can do is take the fish from the lfs when they receive it directly from a supplier (a hawaii order for example)

Six weeks is still safe. But assuming it does not come from a source running copper, it should show up sooner.

I QT everything wet for 12 weeks, that includes tank transfer method time. It allows ample time to rule out diseases, treat diseases, watch for hitchhikers on corals, get fish eating comfortably & switch them to a proper diet if need be.

How are your fish and especially the naso?

the naso unfortunately passed.. he started getting all sort sorts of infections, but it was probably due to his immune system shutting down as all my fish are fine.

i started this thread because i purchased a pair of bluethroat triggers(december 21st), they are from hawaii (a very good source of fish) and were not exposed to copper, actually the lfs specifically put it in a qt tank separate from his system and i picked them up not even 8 hours later

they are eating like absolute pigs! however when i got them the male had a bad case of lympho, after feeding a good diet (mussels, clams, shrimp, octopus, pe mysis all soaked in selcon) the lympo is now 90% gone

i have done 2 rounds of prazi and i am about to get ready to do TT, i had to get 2 huge rubbermaid containers to do it, as the male is big

now i want to rule out velvet as i am paranoid, they have very mild cloudy eyes now i heard some fish like puffers have eyes that are not totally clear, however you have to really focus on the eye to realize it is a little cloudy, they have a crazy appetite swim everywhere, absolutely no scratching, now they do hide/sleep beside the powerhead and heater but i think that is the only place they can lock them self in

the female sometimes breathes fast.... and this is was scares me, again they have never been exposed to any medication other than prazi, and i am wondering if they could have velvet because of the breathing.

one more thing to add, i noticed a few salt looking spots on them last week, but it disappeared in less than 36hours... however i could not tt fish that big with my current tanks.

so should i tt or copper. i am dead scared of velvet! and do not know exactly what to look for, even after reading every thread that snorvich wrote about, i am still not confident

Shoot, I was really hoping the naso would make it. You know, I've seen immune systems deteriorate and infection after infection after treating with Formalin on SEVERAL occasions despite excellent water quality, foods, hufa additions, low stress... Some may say that certain fish simply don't adapt to captivity, well, that holds premise, but in my case they were established fish that I had kept for 2-10 years and I could clearly see changes in coloration & small infections forming after treatment and they died a few months later. I followed the instructions on the bottle and didn't prolong exposure.

Moving along, velvet - when I've brought velvet infected fish home it shows at about the 2 week mark if it's not masked by copper. Once it progresses, fish tend to look dehydrated, or pinched like, but even at this stage I've had full recoveries.

If TTM is too much to handle with these fish and triggers don't tend to have adverse reactions to copper (I haven't heard anything) go for it. Remember to keep the QT at least 10' away from the sump and adjust the pH before adding copper to at least 7.9.
