Velvet?

My Solar Fairy Wrasse has what I think is velvet. White patches of skin near the head and raised scales? I really want to avoid completely wiping out my biological filter (although he is in 40 gal QT with PVC pipes that have actually grown purple coraline algae on them:) I have SeaChem Paraguard and wanted to know if anyone has luck treating with this product? The strange thing about this sickness, is that my SFW is eating fine, swimming fine, and has shown no heavy breathing. He is also in QT with a 3inch Blonde Naso Tang that has shown no signs of illness and is eating sheets of algae, frozen mysis & anything else I drop in the tank. So far I have used preventative treatment of Maracyn 2 & Prazi Pro. I am about finished with second cycle of PraziPro and was going to try the Paraguard after 50% water change and Carbon for a couple of days.

Any input would be great.

Thanks,

Robka

Paraguard lists that it is "the only fish and filter safe aldehyde based parasite control product available for parasites on fish..." so I was hoping to hear a success story of someone using this to treat Velvet or whatever is causing the white patch and raised scales on my SFW. Even though this is a QT I only want to use copper as a last effort solution, especially because the fish is showing no signs of stress & I would like to avoid putting my Tang through it.

Thanks,

Robka

I'm not sure about velvet but my majestic was on deaths door, torn fins, nose down heavey breathing, I treated with paraguard and the next morning I was expecting a dead fish but she was swimming and eating again. I really like this product but I'm not sure what it treated.

Thanks Tracy. I'm glad to hear that you had some success with helping your majestic:)

All of a sudden my Naso stopped eating and is showing a white patch, but the strange thing is that my SFW has the white patches still, but is swimming and eating fine. I guess he has a better immune system than the tang.

I went ahead and did 25% water change and added Paraguard to the QT. I hope this stuff does what it says it does. I'm afraid my Naso is not going to make it. medication has been in the tank for one hour but he is laying on the bottom breathing heavy.

I am keeping my fingers crossed.

put second day dose of Paraguard in the QT. SFW is swimming & behaving like happy fish, but still has a little white patch with raised scales (it looks better than yesterday). I guess I need to keep dosing this everyday until no symptoms are found? If anyone else has experience with this product please let me know. The bottle has vague instructions. My Naso is not doing well but he is still breathing. I hope this medication is helping him?

Well my Naso is now dead. SFW doesn't even seem to be sick except the white patches & raised scales. This hobby can be so frustrating. I am using a 40gal QT with great filtration and water parameters & yet it seems like every single fish I buy has a disease and dies before they can make it to the DT.

WHY IS IT SO DIFFICULT TO BUY A HEALTHY FISH?

I have purchased fish from LA, Diver Den, LFS & blue zoo and all of these retailers have sold me diseased fish:(

I'm sorry about your naso, it is very frustrating. I would pay double for a fish the store had already treated and would guarantee healthy because I would not have the expense and the frustration/work of the QT. I think the stores should hear that message.

It can be a guessing game as to what med to use. I am thankfull for places like this where people who have been doing this longer can help. Maybe pictures would help.

It's too bad you are not closer to me, I am selling my blonde naso who has already been treated with copper, prazipro and paraguard.

Thanks for the offer & good wishes. Is your Naso getting too big or why are you getting rid of him? The Blonde Naso I had seemed like a great fish. He had a great personality and ate like a pig until the the day before he died. My Solar Fairy Wrasse is still in my 40 gal QT and being treated with paraguard at the moment. I probably won't be in the market for another Naso until about 21-28 days from now when I know my SFW is disease free and able to be added to my display tank. This hobby can be so frustrating, but I love just watching my DT. It is like having a little bit of a vacation in my home (as most of our vacations are spent in tropical seas:)

Have a great day,

Robka

Long story, I'm not sure how to feel about my naso,he is beautiful and now that he is in QT he is eating out of my hand which always makes you like a fish. His best bud is a regal tang and together they bothered a beautiful angel I added until she died and being the female that I am I have held a grudge and promised to sell him or flush him. I wouldn't really flush him but I think he would fit better in a more aggressive tank than mine and then again I may be reading him all wrong, he didn't bite or chase the angel, just always seemed to be hovering over her (dominant behaviour). I have worked with animals all my life and was an Equine Canada riding instructor always interesed in animal behaviour but I must say fish behaviour is the most difficult to understand. He is now in QT with the regal tang, majestic angel and maine beta and all get along fine. Aren't you glad you asked.

It's great to hear about the various personalities of our pets. I am a huge dog lover and own a toy poodle and a Spanish Water Dog. Those two girls are both smart and snuggly:) The fact that Naso are great algae control (i have a brown wafer algae problem) & are usually supposed to be personable and non-aggressive is the reason I purchased my 3" Blonde. Hopefully I will have better luck with the next one. At least my SFW seems healthy, it would be nice to get him in my DT alive after his QT time.

Good luck with your tank and your horses:)

Tracey,

I forgot to ask, when you treated with paraguard, how many days did you add the amount on the label. The directions just says "until signs of disease is gone", but fails to say how many days would make sure the disease was 100% gone or if and when you should perform water changes during the treatment? Thanks again for all your help:)

I would love a spanish water dog, they are gorgeous.

I treated for 5 days and kept a close eye on water quality, I was changing 1/8th of the water daily but thats because I have alot of fish in the QT.

I also bought a naso because I had read they were a peaceful tang, I might just keep this guy in qt until all other fish are added to the tank and then put him in last.

Good luck with your wrasse and future purchases.

There are very much fewer cases of velvet than ich.

Copper is effective and it won't do signiificant damage to nitrification bacteria.

I was afraid copper would wipe the bacteria out. I have cupermine, so I will give it a go after the Paraguard. I would hope that after two rounds of Prazipro, one week of Marcyn 2, paraguard and then a cupermine treatment, that whatever my fish has should be cured. I have dealt with Ich before and this doesn't look like Ich.

Thanks for your help:)

Velvet!!!! I hate it nasty illness, it kills me to watch a fish waste away with this. I started my reef tank about 3 months ago after about 20 years Hyades from the hobby.
I set up a 75 gal RT. My first batch of fish did OK for the first few weeks, then the ick showed it's ugly face! I lowered the SG to 1.019 to help them and used no meds in my ST. Didn't lose any fish they fought off the ick. I was thinking great, bought a few other fish a purple dotty-back. Everything going good so far, well think again...the ick was just regrouping for round 2. I started losing fish left and right not recognizing what I had in my tank...long story short set up a QT. with cupermine...keep them in the QT for at least 4 weeks before you add them to your ST. I f you buy live rock do a FW dip for 5 min. And lastly you will lose live stock no matter what you do...it's just part of the challenge of keeping a marine aquarium. You have to do a QT most important. At this point I'm just waiting on the time to pass before I add any fish in my ST (6 weeks) by that time the cycle should be broken and all ick, velvet or any other nastiness that needs a host show have perished. We will see, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
