Velvet

Well I had got 6 fish for my 29 gallon 2 yellow clown gobys, 2 Black clown gobys, and 2 neon gobys. All were added at different times when i add the last of the fish which were the 2 black clown gobys they ended up having velvet and all the fish deid in a week. I didnt know what the problem was and i ended up a week later getting another neon goby. I ended up seeing the velvet on him and then it left anyways i dont want the next fish i get to get that to. So i was going to do hypo on him and then keep my main display fishless for 6 weeks. I was wondering if this would work as i know that velvet is a hard deises to get ride of.

letting the tank lie fallow for 6 weeks isnt going to do anything. it's an online myth. unless your QT all new fish for months, you are going to reintroduce ich with every fish addition. it's a normally occuring parasite that all healthy with can fight off. wild fish carry parasites, period. whenever you add anything, it's going to have "x" along with it.

you added way too many fish in too short a time. 6 fish in a 29 is a lot IMO, exspecailly if you are new in the hobby. try 3 next time, a pair of clowns and another fish after you've successfully maintained the clowns for a few months (be patient).

dont stock as fast and after your initinal fish, QT all new fish for 30 days to reduce the possibility of stress and the possibility of adding a fish with "x" parasites/diseases into your tank. control your aquarium.

I am not convinced that you identified the problem correctly. Please describe all the symptoms. Velvet or Amyloodinium is very difficult to see. You need a lot of light at just the right angle. It does not look like grains of salt. Looks more like a fine powder or dusting,usually more beige or tan than white. Amyloodinium is an obligate parasite, meaning it cannot survive without fish. A better question is how long can it survive in a tank without fish. I would not go less than 2 months.

It is not optional (for people that don't want to kill a lot of fish) to skip quarantine for EVERY fish BEFORE going into the display. A simple Qtank that is cycled is best. No rock or substrate, just PVC pipe and a sponge filter for biological filtration. Qarantine all fish a MINIMUM of 30 days before adding them to the display tank.

They had a white fungus type of coat around them. Also I didnt add them to fast they were small and i added them within two weeks also my tank is three years old. Saliity got to high and endd up killing everyone about a month ago. Also velvet was the only thing i could think of i know that it wasnt ick i have seen ick and it wasnt.
