Ventralis Anthias...Long-term Success???

JustDave and /or Cateyes what temperature do you keep your tanks at ? What is your tank low[ in winter] and high [in summer]?

my tank runs around 78-80, occasionally 81 in the deep summer months if i forget to turn on the ceiling fan in the room.
i know this is a good bit warmer than the suggested temp for them but they seem to suffer no ill effects from the water being on the warm side..

I know the hawaiian ones are not ventralis. My point is they are very very similar in terms of care. They also look nothing alike from the P. ventralis (atleast the males)

As far as im aware, Marshalls isn't exporting any ventralis. The majority are coming from the Cooks. And as of recently from Vanuatu (coral sea area)

If you bought a ventralis before 1-2 years ago, then it most likely came from Boyle in the Cooks.

All are almost identical in terms of care requirements.

They came from the Marshalls.

Similar temps as cateyes reported.

As I've mentioned to you before ,I'm friends with the owners of a Marshall Island collection/ importer/ wholesale company and the one based in Hawaii ( you've met him ,so I was told) told me they were and that was enough for me. They are quite abundant in Enewetak and much less so in Majuro where these were collected.

I figured if they came from marshalls it would be from him. :) The collectors from them get a pretty decent variety compared to the other collectors there. How are they doing from marshalls? I know majuro doesn't produce many, but was told that Kwajalein has schools in the hundreds.

I only know of the population densities in Enewetak as per S. Michael. I know that other guy that had that company called Twilight Aquatics ( or something like that ) was collecting out of Kwajalein but my friends guys only collect from Majuro. I talk to him about certain fish that are supposed to abundant on other islands in the group and tease him about why the just don't take the boat over to one of them and do some collecting ( never mind that Majuro to Kwajalein is like Washington DC to Cleveland and Enewetak is like DC to Chicago.) He says that even with GPS he doesn't like going so far out that he can't see land. I can understand that. On degree off and you can go along ways before you see land I guess but I still **** with him about it.

The Hawaiins are extremely hard to come by. John is the only one I have ever known to have kept them in a home set up. I'm sure there are others but these come from deep cool water and not many people run those types of set ups.

The Ventrailis that came in earlier this year all came from Tonga. They were collected at 50m+. Temps at collection depth's varied from the mid to lower 60's. Very few if anyone managed to keep any alive. It was really surprising these fish were treated so bad after collecting. Usually Tonga does well by it's fish's.

The ventrailis now being offered are from the Cooks. It is my understanding Chip is not doing the collecting. These just like the Tongan form will do much better and adapt quicker if kept cooler.

With the Marshall Islands form it is understandable that they will do better at warmer temps since the waters they are collected from are futher north and exposed to warmer currents for longer.

There is no mistaking the locales they are collected from. Both males and females are clearly differently colored. Just Dave's and cateyes are color form #1 from Micronesia and southern Japan.

i get the hawaiian ones once and a while from the big island. Unfortunately the collector there is rather rough on them and becomes "pin happy" while decompressing them. I medicate them for a while in furazone but they still don't seem to do well (mainly because of the collection method) The females seem to adapt a lot better then the males. Which is usual for most delicate species.

kwajalein is 200 miles away from majuro :) an interisland trip isn't likely on a normal size collection boat. lol Kwajalein supposedly has the most diverse species of fish in the world. I wonder why no one has set up shop there yet!

Well what are you waiting for!:)

I'm thinking of Ventralis after Sang (Maximus) brought them up as a potential fish for his tank.

My tank is a 48" x 20" x 20" tank, with minimal rockwork (about 50lbs at most) and TONS of little swim-through channels and such that I'm pretty proud of! Lots of over the top swimming room as well.

I have two vortech's running at 3,000gph in reef crest mode, so it fluctuates from low to high in random, as well as a 600gph return (eheim 1260 gph rating after plumbing / head loss).

The temp is always 77 degrees without the heater or chiller on, so I can easily maintain it around there.

There are NO other inhabitants at all right now. I will add a ton of trochus snails, and eventually move my bellus genicanthus female into the tank. The bellus has no aggression towards anything.

So no other fish for a month or two, and definitely nothing aggressive. The only other fish I would add is a group of small cardinals and maybe my ocellaris pair that are never aggressive either.

I have a 2x 175watt SE + 2x54watt T5 fixture with the 15k Iwasaki Lamps and ATI Blue Plus t5 lamps.

Since I have no SPS yet, I could just run one T5 and one Iwasaki to help these ventralis get used to the tank, and can feed 3 times a day, maybe more on weekends.

Would a trio work in this case? Would this be a viable environment for them?

Thanks!

I got some in from Vanuatu a few days ago - gorgeous fish.

They seem happy and to be eating and not freaked by light or other fish - they are in with some tukas. WE do seem to have few dramas with Vanuatu fish *touches wood*

These are fairly juvi - I don't think I will get to see them grow old as there is quite a bit of interest in them.

Cheers,
FW

Very nice! Color form #2 isn't seen all that often atleast here in the states. Did you get any males?

Does anyone know if Fairy Wrassler's ventralis anthias is still alive?

Does anyone know if Fairy Wrassler's ventralis anthias is still alive?

Just the 4 fish in that pic. They were a bit of an experiment, but I will definitely order more of them next time.....

Does anyone know if Fairy Wrassler's ventralis anthias is still alive? Or how long did he keep these fish? Thanks!
