Ventralis Anthias Primer

Can anyone share any experiences with Ventralis mixed with other anthias species?

I'm considering adding a trio of P. Flavoguttatus. Thoughts?

I have my ventralis mixed with flavoguttatus and smithvanizi... the male ventralis rules the roost... but the others do fine.

So, I have bad news about my male ventralis. I came home after visiting New Hampshire to a fish with ich. I'm not an expert at fish disease but I think it was stress related to a jump in temperature. I forgot to keep the A/C on today and the tank temp jumped from 74.5 to probably 78-79. Last night, he did not have white spots but this evening he does.

He's swimming straight, eating vigorously but I can tell he's not as strong as in previous days.

I live in an apartment so setting up a hospital tank is pretty tough with the wife. Should I let him try to fight it off and keep up on more frequent water changes? Or maybe contact my LFS to see if they can treat for a fee? How quickly can his health deteriorate if I don't act now? I feel horrible and could use some advice.

Stand Alone, did u finally keep the male alive? Hope you did...

Guys, i´m starting a new 1000 gallon build, (88x47x47) and I definitely LOVE this anthias... My purpose is not to set up a sub-tropical tank like Copps have, but maintain my temp in the lower zone, between 71.6-75.2 maximum (sorry, I use celsius º).

First: Do you think they will thrive in the aquarium?
Second: Which´s the price there in the states? I plan to get 15-25 of them...

Any advice will be helpful. Thank you for your time

Garfield, just as quickly as the ick arrived, it vanished the following morning. All three Ventralis are doing fine - they've put on some good weight since I received them 5 weeks ago.

They've adjusted to full LED lights and are always in the water column. The male eats Nutramar Ova, frozen mysis and pellets. He sometimes eats flake food.

The females are still finicky, only accepting Ova and rarely sampling mysis.

I'm not sure if this is strange behavior or not but they've now developed a "flight formation" where the male is in the center and one female to the front and one to the rear. Quite an interesting sight.

Thank you very much for your fast answer...
The trio is AMAZING, I suppose they adopt that "combat formation" just for security purposes hahaha. Just kidding, I think they tend to control every enemy coming wherever it comes, they may feel in the open sea, where threat comes from nowhere.
If you allow me, could you tell me how many $ did you paid for them?
Thanks!

I wish I wasn't so hopeless at taking photos so that I could show you the ones that come out of the Coral Sea. They have a lot more red in them especially on the dorsal fin and a really good male is extensively patterned almost like a Tasanoides. However females look similar to the ones already posted.

For other ventralis keepers here, do you find they bicker a lot amongst themselves - a bit like Chromis but without the casualties?

I got them from Pacific Island Aquatics for $375 + $50 shipping.

How often are you feeding them?

dwanner - for the first 3 weeks or so, they were fed about 6-8 times per day. Now they're fed around 3-4 times per day. If it's my day off, I'll feed them small amounts throughout the day.

You really need to have a wife that doesn't work to keep Ventralis :). They're always hungry!

Thank you stand. I recently discovered the Continuous hatch n feeder, and I think that could be the key to maintain them properly... Do you feed them frozen food, or they'll eat dry foods too?

The food that worked for me the best was Nutramar Ova. They accepted this food the very next day. For the most part, they only eat Ova and Mysis. They don't really like pellets or flake.

Gorgeous fish. How difficult are these to keep compared to Queens\Tuka, can they be kept in groups of 4 - 6. Would they mix with Borbonius Anthias?

Guys, need some help and ideas here with my harem of ventralis which are listless this morning. The 5 ventralis were brought in two separate batches (male didn't make it through QT from the first batch) and they've been in the tank for 2 months. The first batch was shipped from Hawaii and the second batch was through QM.

They all went through TTM and were then QT for a month prior to being added to the tank. Up until yesterday, they were acting fine, bickering with each other with my most dominant female chasing the other fish in the tank around. The other inhabitants are a trio of green chromis, a pair of onyx clowns, a leopard wrasse, and a golden dwarf moray, and a male ruby red scooter.

The tank is at work and is SPS dominant and temps hover in the 76-77°F range. Fish are fed every day with a large variety of mostly frozen food, which includes: LRS nano, V20 mini mysis (chopped up), capelin roe, bbs, oyster eggs, and a daily feeding of Otohime pellets in the morning via an Apex AFS. The GDM is fed a frozen silverside every other day. I manually thaw the food out in a beaker with RO water and add portions of the food to the tank throughout the day (8+ feedings).

I'm going to do a water change later today, but would be interested in knowing from others if anyone experienced this before.

All of them are still alive. They're in the same conditions that I saw them last on Friday although a bit skinnier (left town for the weekend). I'll be moving them to the QT later today.

Ventralis

Ventralis

I have a pair of Ventralis in my 60 gallon and they are doing great. The most dominate of the pair converted over to male maybe a month ago and looks awesome. The key with these guys is to quarantine them in lower light until they start eating well then you can start increasing the light. Also, although I cannot say for sure if this is required, I put mine in early in the tank stocking process so that they didn't have to compete for food. Also I fed ROE and fish eggs so the prey size more closely match what they eat in the wild. Now they go after Larry's just as much and out compete some my angle for food.
