Venustus Angel in QT

Like the title says, I have one in QT, she has started eating but also started scratching a little today. I don't see any ich, should I start with prazipro or cupramine?

Hmmm. What is it eating and how aggressivly? I would definitly treat w cupramine and prazipro but not until the venustus is eating aggressi ly. The scratching wont kill it too quick un less it looks like velvet. If eating aggressivley I would start a 4 week cupramine treatment...

I would not say he is eating aggressively but he improves everyday, yesterday he started eating flakes and pellets, he will pick at nori and has consumed a few live black worms. He looks great, good colour, maybe I will wait and watch a bit longer, thanks.

So that I might live vicariously through you how long have you had it in Q so far and what salinity are you running at? I've got something in my Q right now and waited until aggressive feeding too before starting prazipro. But still keenly watching for signs of the first disease battle to resurface.

Thanks Houser, I'll take all the luck I can get. I have only had him 10days so I am still holding my breath. Salinity is 1.025, he has liverock with algae growth which I will remove if I medicate. My QT is large and he has a couple of tank mates, he is the boss, not shy at all like have read. When I come to feed he is first in line but doesn't always like what I am serving, I do feel better now that he is eating flakes. I will try to get a picture tomorrow. Now, share your secret, who is in your QT?

You could try to lower the salinity, it will give it more o2 and they tend to do better in lower temps so if you can get your temp down it may relieve some stress and make it eat a little better...just a thought. I would make sure it is eating good then start meds. Just don't wait too long to start meds or you may lose it from the parasite. Another optio. In a formalin dip or fw dip to give it temporary relief...

Not so fast. I'm bowing to superstition. Can't claim it or get excited until it clears Q.

I like the hypo and the lower temp suggestions buys you a little more time in some cases to figure out what the hell is going on. Good luck.

She is eating even better today. Here are a couple of pictures, sorry I am a lousy photographer

she doesn't like the longnose hawk in her tank and is picking on him, I might have to pull him if she keeps it up.

Ryan, will the other fish handle 75? Tankmates are, longnose hawk, copperband butterfly and yellow coris wrasse.

Houser, I was the same way about my achillies, I didn't want to say anything for fear of jinxing myself, I still pray nightly. He has been in the DT since May and looking great so far, knock on wood.

I decided to start a 1/2 dose of cupramine tonight. I am lowering the temp and salinity for the o2 factor. I have treated with hypo before and don't like this option because it only treats ich, so if you lower to hypo levels and then find you have a different issue I don't think you can then medicate.

She is still looking good and eating flakes off the top of the water, bossing everyone around, I really hope this is the right choice, she is so beautiful.

it looks good and im glad its eating better! all fish can handle lower temps just fine and many do better in lower temps. I run 73 -76 with many fish. Plus a venustus is deeper water fish and is used to lower temps than reef surface temps. I would agree in the start of cupramine. Make sure he continues to eat well at 1/2 dose before you go 100% and keep us updated!

Update, I have dosed the other 1/2 of the first day dose and she is eating better than ever, she loves Ocean Nutrition Formula two pellets and ON Brine Shrimp Plus Flakes, also still eats live black worms but not as interested in the nori now. I bought a Seachem copper kit awhile ago and when I got it home the vial of powder was almost empty, rip off, so I am trying to find another kit before I dose again, hard to find in my area.

great to hear. the seachem kit comes like that...its ok. read the directions. youll see you use very little of that powder. ihave a seachem kit and i like it much better than the salifert kit...

Thanks Ryan, I mean literally almost empty, I used it when I bought it for fish I was treating but it was only good for a couple of tests, I like the kit for accuracy but I need another one. I can get other copper tests here but its hard to find the Seachem ones. I think I will treat half of the second dose in the am and then go and find a test kit, if I can't find Seachem is Sailfert second best?

This morning she came up to eat but is doing alot of head twitching. I hope I haven't overdone it but I added half of the second dose of copper and 2 tsp of prazipro with treats 40g, she is in 100g, she is doing alot of scratching, any advice, have I gone too far or have I just added enough meds to stress her out?

I have used cupramine and prazipro together many times, but the venustus definitly has something. I would add the remainder of the prazi today to make it treat the full tank volume. Then after a week, you could do a 100% WC and then redose the full dose of cupramine to keep the cupramine effective and pull the prazipro. But i agree, the venustus needs both treatments for now.... The most important thing is to feed a lot w/ nutrient enriched foods and keep water quality PERFECT!

Ok, I did a 5g water change, syphoned the bottom and added the rest of the prazi. She is still eating a looking pretty good. My sweet little venustus says thanks Ryan.
