vermetid snails

I'm trying to rid my tank of vermetid snails. I've read that copper banded butterfly fish and certain types of hermit crabs feed on them. Do you have any other suggestions?? What types of hermit crabs do you stock that would be most effective at eliminating them (keeping in mind that I could only stock hermit crabs that are reef safe).

jlinzmaier,

Thank you for your question. A few types of hermit crabs that may eat the Vermetid Snail are Blue Leg, Red Leg, and Halloween Hermit Crabs. Other than the Copper Banded Butterflyfish and hermit crabs, you might wish to try removing the Vermetid Snails by hand.

Nice coincedence, my name is Jeremy and my tank is infested with vermitids too. I tried to elimate then by hand, but most returned. I had probably a thousand of them.

Will the Halloween hermits kill off my scarlet hermits? Also, do the Australian cbb acclimate easier than the regular ones? Would you suggest a cbb going into quarantine (my q-tank is a 20L), or is this a fish that should be put directly into the display - which I feel would be a better environment for a delicate fish than a stark q-tank.

jmicky41,

Thank you for contacting us with your questions. While it is always possible a species can be aggressive generally Halloween Hermit crabs are considered peaceful. We always recommend quarantining any new additions to your aquarium. The different collection sites of Copperband Butterflyfish all acclimate the same.

We hope this information is helpful. If you have any further questions please feel free to contact us.
