Vertex 280?

Jeremy,
I am setting up a 190 display which will be heavily stocked /w smaller fish and SPS /w another 250G of water between frag tank, sump, refugiums, and quarantine.

Now that the Vertex 280 has been out for a while do you think that this would be a good match? Finances are presently limited concerning going with a pricier skimmer.

In my opinion, I think it would be a perfect match. I'm not a fan of going way oversized on skimmers, as I feel you actually hurt yourself in performance by doing that. I believe in sizing a skimmer appropriately, which the 280 would be more than capable of handling what you're setting up.

I'm still somewhat undecided. How does the Vertex 280 skimmer compare to the Super Reef Octopus 3000 or 5000 internals? From what I understand I would be getting a much better skimmer pump with the octopus.

The latest Vertex pumps work excellent, I personally wouldn't have an issue running it, and the track record on them is much better than the old Gen 1 pumps. The 280 would be comparable in performance to the SRO 5000. In my opinion you probably wouldn't see a difference in performance between the two if they were side by side.

Thanks for your reply. I'm originally from Greenfield, IN and usually stop in when visiting family. It looks like I'll be taking home my Christmas present this year.
