Very disapointed

I just wanted to share my experiences with this vendor.

Less than 2 weeks ago i purchased a Tunze 9010 from MD. Upon receipt of the item, i put it together and started to use it. There were alot of microbubble coming out of the skimmer, but it skimmed like a champ. Based on some RC searches I did, I decided to give the skimmer a week to stop spewing microbubbles. Unfortunately, they never stopped. At this point I decided to disassemble the unit to look to see if there was a problem. Indeed there was a crack at the couple that connectd the air inlet, pump and hydroformer. While the microbubble were annoying, I did not have a spare skimmer, and instead of trying to get a refund/replacemet, I decided to just get a new part. The next day before I had a chance to order the new part, the skimmer stopped skimming entirely!!!

When I called MD to try and get a refund or replacement, the customer service agent assured me that he could get me a refund and that he would call me back. Later that day I recieve an e-mail from MD saying that they would not replace the item and that a refund would require a 25% restocking fee:eek2:

When I spend $340 dollars on an item, I expect that if it breaks within two weeks of purchase that the seller would replace it or refund me in a timely manner. Am I crazy for believing that this is the correct way to do business?

So here i am with a heavily stocked, bare bottom 80g system, and 25# live rock, just waiting for my tank to crash...... Thanks MarineDepot, the thousands that I have spent with you apparently mean nothing:(

Did you try contacting roger from Tunze? He can send you replacements or repair your pump if its under warranty. You should ask in the Tunze forum. maybe he can help you.

Roger is out of town.

The problem is that it is only 10 days old. MD should take care of it. I should get a replacement or refund ASAP ... I need a skimmer now! If a retailer can't stand by their product for such a short period of time, why not just buy everything on Ebay....

$340 dollars is alot of money, and for me to have to pay $90+ out of my own pocket to return a defective item is criminal. If I were returning it becuase I didn't like it, then I could understand the fee .... but c'mon..

Hello,

Thanks for your feedback, I'm sorry to hear the trouble your having with your Tunze Skimmer. We do stand behind all our products, Tunze is one of our manufactures that prefers to handle their own warranties or will authorize us to return an item. Unfortunately Roger from Tunze will not be back in the office until the 10th of September. http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1188879
We have offered to send you replacement parts but we were unsuccessful. At this time we have made an exception for you based on the information provided and an RMA ( return Merchandise Authorization) number was issued, RMA number 100310299. Once we receive the Skimmer we will look it over and test it, The 25% fee was imposed and can be waived or removed if the item is indeed defective as you mentioned

Please feel free to contact us with any further questions you may have

Hello,

...We have offered to send you replacement parts but we were unsuccessful. ... \

News to me! Here is a copy of the initial e-mail sent by one of your reps. Besides the disrespectful accusatory tone, there is absolutely no mention that I might recieve a full refund. In fact, it quite definitely states that I will have to pay a restocking fee:

"....Thank you for contacting Marine Depot Live again. I am sorry you are having trouble with your skimmer. With most manufacturers we would take back the defective skimmer, however Tunze does not allow us to do so and requires all warranty service and returns go through them. This is there policy as they are the manufacturer of the product. Roger is very good about handling warranty problems and has an excellent reputation. In an attempt to assist you, we asked for clarification on what is wrong with the skimmer, so we could possibly send you the parts needed to fix the skimmer or have Tunze send them, or possibly return it. There by saving you the trouble of contacting Tunze. The information you have given us in the two recent emails conflicts with what you told us earlier by phone. By phone you stated it was damaged/cracked when you received it, but you decided to use it any way. Now you state it broke after 11 days. If it arrived damaged and you let us know at the time, we would have filed a UPS claim and immediately sent a replacement that day. Due to the delay, it is all but impossible for us to successfully make a UPS claim now.

Your live stock should be able to go much longer then a few days without a skimmer if your tank is in good condition. We do not sell used products, as we know our customer would not be happy receiving a used product. Since we are not authorized by Tunze to take back products for warranty, I went a head and authorized Robert to offer to take it back with a 25% restocking fee and we would eat the rest of the cost as we can not sell it. Upon inspection we can determine weather to waive the restocking fee. I have issued a RMA numbered 100310299 if you wish to return the skimmer. Please put this number clearly on the outside of the box after packing the skimmer securely with all original items including the Tunze box if possible. Address it to Marine Depot 1300 E. Gene Autry Way , Anaheim CA 92805 . I suggest you insure the package as we will not be responsible for loss or damage on the way to us. I hope this is of assistance.

Please let us know if you have any further questions. Our technical support team is here for you. We would love to hear from you and your friends.

do u have any spare pumps?????.....I believe mine is dead, has no more life.....it has a short in it where it causes my GFI to go to ground, it does not work at all....

Hello,

Thanks for the reply, unfortunately I do not have any spare pumps for your unit available, I apologize for the inconvenience. Please contact Roger on Monday. In the meantime I would recommend that you run some carbon or a polyfilter, this will help keep the the dissolved organics to a minimum until you get your skimmer replaced or fixed.
