Everyone who reefs for a while will encounter disaster, even the "pros". Its just a part of the hobby.
That's true Eric B.'s tank crashed about two weeks ago.

few pics for you

I wouldn't have thrown those corals away like that. It looks like a bunch of them still have flesh on them. I've had corals die off to only a couple polyps left. After some good TLC they have grown back. It's amazing what one living polyp can do. But I am sorry for your loss. Stupid technology!

Man that is so ruff! I feel for you. I mean its one thing when you have a frag bleach out, but an entire colony you have been growing for years is such a thorn in your side. It takes them so long to grow and then to get them to this really nice size and have them colapse.

Thanks.

My condolences.

The more threads like these I read the more I lean in favor of running lower temp sets (76-78) and keeping heating wattages to a minimum. It seems a lot of crashes are caused by malfunctioning heaters/temp contolers lately.

my 180 got to somewhere over 90 on jan 6. i lost all the softies, lps and all but one sps, all but 3 fish (surprisingly the big tangs made it). my clams, zoas and xenia survived, but a bunch of large softies died. now i have a mostly sps tank. the zoas stayed open the whole time.
i changed 200 gallons of water in two days and it sucked. i was so depressed and felt like i wanted to quit, but i am determined to make it better and more colorful.

I'm sure alk played a major role in it tfp as a matter of fact I think it was the biggest factor. The heat just helped them stress out even more. Entire tank is lost.
