Check this asfur out, well I think it's an asfur. Very yellow. What do you think? T

Maybe the yellow band is larger and giving the perspective of more yellow. Just gotta see it in person to make the call. Got a 1 1/5" captive bred and can't wait for it mature.

That is weird how the yellow band goes toward the head also instead of the normal crescent moon shape it usually has.

Ooops. Got a maculosus, so we'll keep an out for this as the blue is much better.

Kirkaz, have you had yours since a juvi?

If it's an old ange,..l thats very small.

I actually find the yellow band to be a little too much for my personal tastes (too many fish with yellow in my tank i suppose )

Do you know how big it is? I would say the "blue" looks more faded than the typical, perhaps like it is very old, here is my 4.5 inch for comparison.

Well, you could look at the PVC pipe behind him. I would figure it's reasonably safe to assume that the pipe, if American, would be 1", or 1.5" (or 3/4"). So it's also reasonably safe to assume a foreign tank would use a similar size. The only possible real marking of size, is "30" which is visible only on the reflection of the pipe. A quick google of 30mm, err 3cm PVC, shows it's a fairly common foreign size. 30mm ~ 1.18inches.

So suffice to say, my guess is that Asfur is about 6" total.

Don't know why, but I really LIKE IT!!!!
Of corse, I have angel mania & have had it for years. LOL

No, I got him at about 3.5 inches and he was fully changed...I believe P Asfur and and P Maculosus lose their juvenile coloration fairly quickly, and at a small size compared to many other Pomacanthus angels.

P. asfur loses it quickly, but some macs especially those from a certain area, I believe kenya, can keep them for a very long time. Most do change young though.

The majestic is also one that changes early, along with the africanus.

My juvi mac angel started changing to adult colors within 4 months. Growning from 3/4" to nearly 4" now and I've only had him about 8 months. The yellow band on the mac is forming very quickly as well.

Nice! They do grow at alarming rates, macs that is, asfurs are painfully slow.

Agreed! I've had mine for 18+ months, and has grown less than an inch while my Passer and Emp. are growing quite quickly....I have a book (Complete Encyclopedia of the Saltwater Aquarium by Nick Dakan) he lists it as max size 6 inches, and this is verbatim what he writes about it

"P. asfur is regarded by some as a dwarf angelfish, and this might be correct while the fish is still young, but as it grows into adulthood, the Purple Moon Angel behaves more like larger angelfish becoming progressively more destructive and quite aggressive in the mixed aquarium."

I always thought it was an error...Maybe he got it right? Tim, any thoughts....Or any other Angel exerts.

Well, they get bigger than 6 inches, that is for sure, but when grown up in captivity I haven't heard many cases of big asfurs. Most are probably in the six inch range. I have seen big ones though over a foot long, but they were most likely collected in the wild.
