vho with mh

Tanks are supposed to be relaxing, theraputic and not something to loose so much sleep over. If lighting is having this effect, start slow, be patient and research lighting. Post a pic of your set up so people can see what you are working with. Wine Please!

One post with more information would have been more effective.

Yeah, unfortunately you gave us very little to go on... More information would be very helpful. With your canopy, heat is probably going to be a concern. T5's put out less heat than MH do, as a general rule of thumb, but be prepared that even with T5's you may need a chiller or fans to keep your tank's temperature from skyrocketing. I think that a good six-bulb T5 retrofit would work well for you, but pictures of your setup and more information about what you've got would be helpful...

I would go atleast with 150w mh and that would let you keep everything from sps at the top to zoos on the bottom there are allot of light that going for sale on the used forum someones trash if someone elses treasure. Just to let you know i've bought 2 light systems that were used and have served me nicely.

I had used MH + VHO for years. It is a great combo and very underrated.

If you like more of a true actinic, go with the 03 blue. It is a very nice color and brings out a lot of fluorescent. It looks great just by itself IMO. It also suppliments halides well.

If you want a slightly brighter and less actinic looking blue, use the 454 bulb. Good choice as well. It reminds me of a 7100K 460 nm compact fluorescent. A brighter blue versus the 03 and more of a royal blue color.

Dont be concerned with which VHO has higher PAR. It wont matter. The most important aspect of your lighting will be the halides. You can use any VHO actinic regardless of its PAR and still have great growth.

A good idea would be to check with your LFS first. Generally, VHO bulbs can be expensive to ship (5 ft and 6 ft that is) and can often break. Even if the LFS is higher in price, they may be cheaper after you consider shipping cost.

chiller?

chiller?

hey do you this 2 250 watt metal halides would be to much for a 90 gallon and would i need a chiller if so should i just get a t5 ho setup this is all ganna be retrofit in my canopy and i am ganna have a mixxed reef setup maly soft corals can i burn softies

Okay I posted on here earlier that I liked the Actinic R for the fluorescence in the corals and had used them for years. We went to a LFS that we heard about yesterday and they were having a huge sale on fish , corals and bulbs so I decided to try one 454 bulbs to see how it looked. I have to say it is much bluer than the Super R bulbs I`m used to but it does have a brighter output to it lighting the tank up more. I decide to put the 454 in the back and the 03 in the front and it actually looks pretty good. It gives the tank a brighter blue appearance but also has the fluorescence that I like also. I may run it this way now just for the "New" look. They do make the 03 bulbs look purple when they burn so there is a very noticeable color difference in the two

Bad pic with old camera but gives an idea kind of
