vho's for clam?

I have 440w's of vho and was wondering what your guy's thought was if I were to add a crocea or maxima? You think its possible?

I am not sure that that would be enough. How deep is your tank? If you are going to get a clam why not select one of the less light demanding clams. If I recall correctly the crocea and maxima are the most demanding when it comes to light.

I agree. Not a good idea on a 120. You could try a Deresa or Squamosa
clam, but even with the height of a 120 I would not place them on the bottom of the tank. I would try in the upper 1/2 of the tank. Also watch moving them from MH lighting at your LFS to VHO's in your tank. They do not like to have huge swings in light intesity and can bleach out sometimes.

You can probably pull it off with a deresa or squamosa. I wouldn't try putting either on the rocks though. They are both sand dwelling clams and will probably knock themselves off if they are perched off the sand.

I'd say maxima and crocea are both out of the question.

T-5's and vho's are very different. T-5's produce a lot of light and many for clams require indivual reflectors. Also many T-5 fixtures for clams and SPS are 6 or 8 bulb. The issue for you is going to be you have a 120 gallon tank and they are 24" deep. You would need 2 250 watt MH to light it for clams and SPS. Depending on what type of ballast you have you couls switch it over to T-5 lighting and run 6 or 8 bulbs for relatively low cost. I have 3 extra ballasts that will run T-5's if you need an extra one. I have 2 ballasts that will run 2 bulbs and one that will run 4 bulbs.

I have 2 250w mh but im afraid to hook them up, as I currently do not have a chiller and the temperature might rise also my soft corals might now like that much light, but then again I have plenty room for sps..hmm?.. If I wanted to use 6 t5's will I still be able to use my canopy?

The 250's would definitely work and you could acclimate your softies to the light by placing screens over the aquarium and removing one every week or so. Also the 6 T-5's would work fine for a Maxima or Crocea placed on the rocks. I would think you would need to get a chiller with the MH. I live in NY and for 7 years I had a reef without a chiller. I just bought one this season and I am very glad I did. You could probably get away without one, but if you have hot weather for a week your done. You should still be able to use your same canopy for 6 T-5's because they are only 5/8" instead of 1.5" per bulb. Just be sure to get reflectors for each bulb. Also you will still need to light acclimate your corals for a week or 2 because it will be a lot more light.
