(Video) How Long Would It Take For a Non-Infected Fish to Show Signs Of Ich

Hey guys,

Quick question...

I know with 99.9% certainty that I'm being paranoid here...

I had a few white spots show up on our Yellow Bellied Blue Tang a few months ago. Didn't really look like ich, but I decided since no coral was in the tank yet, that I'd hypo the display.

Had the salinity down at 1.008 for 6 weeks+ then brought it back up. Never saw any spots again, even after the YB Blue had the spots and 2 months before I ran hypo they never came back.

I just added 10 fish that were quarantined for 5 to 8 weeks in 3 different tanks to the display yesterday. All were treated for 28 days straight with ParaGuard (everyday doses) and 3 rounds of PraziPro. Never noticed any diseases on any of the fish. Crosshatch female had a cloudy eye early on, but after a day of Prazi it was gone.

Today I noticed my Black Tang has a white mark on the crest of his dorsal fin.

I'm thinking he scuffed it on a rock or some aggression related mark. He also has a little slice in his tail that wasn't there.

My question is:
In a tank with no present ich. If a sick fish was introduced with a few drops of their water into a clean tank, how long would it take for a non-infected fish to show a decent sized ich white spot?

Thanks guys

Here is a video of him...

Might be better to view it on YouTube in a large screen at a higher resolution to see it better.

Maybe lympho? Does it look like ich?

Why do you think that Paraguard cures ich?

Seems like Seachem says that treating everyday over a full cycle should kill it off. Mainly used it as a preventative medication. I didn't see any signs of anything during QT, minus the cloudy eye.

What is your opinion of the mark Steve?

Also about the question of how long a clean fish would take to show signs of ich infection after a sick fish / infected water was introduced?

Wanted to also add the Black Tang is acting 100% normal. No darting, scratching, loss in appetite, etc...

Examined everyone else with a close eye to the pectoral fins. Can't see anything on anyone.

You might not see ich for a long time as it often starts in the gills; as such it is not possible to answer your question. A fish could contract ich as soon as two weeks.

I only trust copper, CP and tank transfer as an ich prophylactic treatment and prefer strongly tank transfer.

What are your opinions of the black tang in the video? Spot looks to be right at the end of one of the bones in his fin.

If it was Ich and the other fish were introduced yesterday, probably wouldn't be that visible in one day?

The white spot on the dorsal fin looks to be lymphocystis. (However I hate doing diagnosis visually since the focus is not all that close or crisp).

it is not a good idea to try to use visual as a way of diagnosing ich. It will for sure bite you in the Butt some day.

What's the best way to diagnose it?

Ich would drop off in 2-3 more day's right?

Well tank transfer eliminates it so that is what I use. However, having been doing this a while, I can tell from the behavior of the fish almost immediately whether it has ich or velvet. And I always want to practice that skill in quarantine rather than in a display tank.

Don't think so it will drop off ich will be present in your tank till there is any living creatures alive

Meant it drops off the fish after a few days. Then will come back again.

If the spot on his fin is there for 2 weeks, it's not Ich.

Whays your telltale sign behavioral wise in qt?

Btw: I'm pretty strict, even qt coral and inverts in a fishless tank for 12 weeks.

Paranioa is my worst enemy...

Bro that's what I am asking if it's not ich then what is it

Lymphocyst would be my guess, also Steve's.

No more spots today, just this one. Been a little lazy on water changes recently with all the quarantines I was running. Also been working on an automated water change system, but have to put it off while we go on our trip next week.

I'll do a big change this weekend.
