vinegar eels

thanks!!

The last article said they will "eliminate" the competion and you will in the end have only two mating pair. Is that your experience? How many do you have? Also, will they eventially kill off their own fry?

Ah there's the rub... Eventually the males will start competing for the female's attention. Up until last week I had 2 adult males and 1 female in a 37 g. tank...this arrangement for 2 years. I think one of my young males spawned with its mom because I had 2 sets of fry at opposite ends of the tank.

This was just too much for the dominate male to handle and he started picking on the second adult male who jumped. I was very saddened. At some point you must remove the older juvies, about 6 months or so. I sell them off. They have small spawns so I usually have about 6 to sell.

You can do a lovely community Tanganyika tank, just not with these guys. Check out this site for more info on them. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/
A 55 might be roomy enough for 2 pairs but then you would have a zillion fry to deal with.

Hey thanks for all the info!! My wife and I would love to get back into cichlids, but we might also prefer a community tank so our kids can pick more of a variety. We'll see though.

I have to involve the kids so they can learn to do the water changes!! Of course if I can talk my wife into letting me set up a fish room in the garage, and if get the tanks situated correctly with pvc piping and bigger sumps, I'll have pumps that do the changes for me...hmmmm this hobby is expensive!!

Thanks!!

I have some, its been dormant for about 2 1/2 months, meaning i havent touched it for that long, i can split it into 2 new ones if you like, i think we had a talk about this awhile ago. I also have confused flour beetles, i am going to kill the culture because i no longer have a need for them, the only thing fw i am keeping is fw clams and about 5 or 6 Lake Malawi cichlid, some one had asked about types of fish to keep if i was to redo my tank i would go with Discus wiki , i will get back to you sherl on the eels...

A FW guy from Tulsa is bring some down to the other club meeting but it's in Norman...not going to drive all the way down there! If you are coming up for the meeting Josh I would love to have a culture. Thanks!
