Vinegar vs. Rubber

What is the effect of vinegar on rubber? I have read it will ruin suction cups, but want to know exactly how and why.

Well. Google has not helped much with this one.

In general terms, vinegar contains acetic acid. As the name suggests, acetic acid is corrosive, and this particular acid is capable of reacting with rubber.

For exact reaction mechanisms, you'll need to find someone who's taken chemistry classes much more recently than I have, or a chemist working in the rubber industry.
