Vista and Optimum Online?

I bought a Dell for my parents about 2 weeks ago.
It came with Vista installed, and I'm using Optimum Online. The cable modem is connected to a router, and then that computer and this one are connected to the router.
Both computers (this one running XP the other running Vista) are connected to the modem and the internet just fine.
I don't know of any compatibility issues between optimum online modems and vista, but if there were such issues, you might want to call up optimum online support and see if they know about it and possible solutions.

I'm guessing they have an ethernet card in their computer and then they plugged that into the optimum online cable modem?
They might want to try updating their ethernet card drivers, but I've personally never heard of that issue (although I don't know much about vista).

Easy, dont use the USB cable. Ill bet they are trying to install the USB driver and its not compatible with Vista. Tell them to use the ethernet (Cat5) cable instead and no driver is needed.
In any event, USB cuts the speed in half and should never be used on any computer/cable modem connection.
Optimum Online is faster than what USB 1.1 can transfer so they are not getting the most out of Optimum by using USB.

I wonder why anyone would say any operating system would cause trouble with a cable modem?
If your computer has a network card and your operating system recognizes the card and shows it as working, then you should be able to pull an IP address from your router or modem.
The only possible problem you're having is a Hardware issue like d4a2n0k just mentioned.
I also think you should try using an Ethernet connection.

You installed Vista and did not install the drivers for your network or USB card. If you have the driver disk that might have come with your computer, then all you have to do is update your USB or Ethernet driver with that disk.
If you don't have the disk and know the exact model number for your Ethernet card or USB (Even though most USB support is built right into most operating systems) then all you have to do is go to the manufacturers site, lookup the driver for your exact piece of equipment and download it for free.
This is a process that is best handled by someone that is computer literate though. If you have the skillz, go for it. Otherwise, if you need help, I'll do what I can. Mind you, I am really busy, that's why I usually only post here in the wee hours...

I have heard horror stories about Vista not loading properly, and the system reverting back to the original OS.
I have also heard that once Vista is installed, many people have experienced not being able to get their monitor to come on.
I don't know a lot about these machines, so I'm sticking with Windows XP. It works fine for what I do.

As a cablevision employee Microsoft doesnt have USB support for Motorola and Webstar Modems when using vista you HAVE to go out and buy an ethernet card if you dont have one.

CAblevision's policy is we are telling anyone with vista to not even attempt the usb install its corrupting part of the registry so just use the ethernet or go buy one
