I am guessing the tank is less than a year old(sry if I'm wrong). The rocks could be releasing built up nutrients. Carbon dosing can help this problem but you do need a good skimmer and follow the plan in the link above and you should be good to go. You can always ramp up the dose slower than the plan just never faster.

Carbon (Vodka) dosing is for reducing high Nitrate (NO3) and Phosphate (PO4) levels. If you do not have problem with those do not dose.

Does vodka dosing also lower Phosphate? I was always under the impression it only lowered nitrates.

It will lower phosphates some. The generally accepted ratio is 16:1. That is, 16 nitrates and 1 phosphate are used to make a new bacterial organism. Since phosphate is removed at a much lower rate then nitrate, reefers often use GFO to help remove more phosphate.

Heck, I dose a vodka vinegar combo plus use GFO (periodically) and a ATS.

Whenever I have a bladder infection I have a couple vodka cranberries and share a bit with the fish...seems to help

That looks just like my tank a few weeks ago. Ironically, it's the same age as yours.

I tried lights out, increase W/C frequency, take out the sand, limited feeding, and scrubbing all the rocks. I repeated these methods for a couple of times. It only helped for a few days, and the algae came back even more stronger.

I followed Sk8r's thread about using NoPox and started dosing that also. While dosing I also turned the lights off for one week. I'm only 2.5 weeks in the process, but I can see that all of the algae died very quickly. I started with 5ml/day and have cut back to 2ml/day. I plan to monitor the algae growth and decrease the dosage slowly over the next few months.

The sad part is i had to,move my anemonee out do to the problem i a condy and he wasnt happy with the alge growth but fine before hand

Hi all i recently purchased a full set up and the guy was dosing vodka through a dosing unit, i have recently been looking in to stopping the dose but have read this could cause serious effects in my tank if done straight away. Now for the best bit upon pressing buttons on my kamoer 4 channel Doser i somehow erased all the dosing data including that of my vodka dose, now i do not know what, and how much was being dosed originally. altho i must say i have had the tank for 4 weeks now and parameters are perfect regardless of all the breaking down, moving and rebuilding. The main question is do i just stop Dosing the vodka, or re-dose on the lower dose of 0.5ml gradually weaning my tank of.

I've never heard off an issue with quickly stopping vodka dosing, other than the nitrates and phosphates coming back up, but that's simply from the bacteria that were consuming it as fast as it was introduced now being carbon limited and not growing fast enough.

As long as your phosphates and nitrates are in check, there should be no issue
