Vodka and Anemones

Does anyone here keep anemones and dose vodka. I have 3 bubbletips that I have had for years and they have always been healthy. I have been dosing vodka for about 2.5 weeks and they have all gone downhill. Vodka addition is the only change made to my system. I was following genetics article in reefkeeping and was only up to 4 ml on a 500 gallon system.

My rbta is in really bad shape. I have a mixed reef and saw no ill effects to any other corals. Everything else actually looks better than it ever has. Needless to say I stopped the vodka and changed 25 percent of the water.

Anyone else dose vodka and have healthy btas? Thanks

did it for months no problems, start slow following guidelines set out in the article in reefkeeping

I noticed mine deflated hours after I would do my starting dose (which was 0.1mL for a 46 gallon tank).

I stopped and added another 0.1mL 3 days later to see the same result. Needless to stay I've stopped vodka dosing for now. I have a GBTA.

I only share my vodka with friends. I never drink with anemones.

:lolspin:

One of my BTAs would regularly detach and wonder the tank after a dosing.
Drifting while drunk. DWD :p

Im not sure if its just the vodka addition or carbon addition in general. I started with MB7 two weeks prior to the vodka and continue with that even though I have stopped the vodka. I will likely not add any carbon until they recover and then perhaps try some vinegar. The thing is, all of my other corals were looking better than ever. Great PE and super clear water. Bummer.

Any other experiences?

I dose vodka with my anemone and I have noticed if I over do the vodka the anemone reacts to it in a negative way. I just cut back on vodka dosing quantity but still do it everyday with great results. Try dosing smaller amounts or maybe real small amounts more frequently like dosing pump. Take it slow in small amounts for me it is.

Maybe adding in smaller amounts would help. Generally, I just squirt the 4ml into the sump with the syringe.

I saw direct correlation to my anemone's appearance and the vodka dosing.

The anemone's feed from some nitrogenous matter in the water and once the vodka removes all nitrates i think the nem gets weak. That's my theory. Not fact, just what i think. Cause i do know when u cut an anemone in half it has no mouth and it absorbs nitrogenous matter from water column to grow....

Strange. I have stopped dosing for about a week now and they already look better. I may wait a couple more weeks and then try again and see what happens.

Sorry to hijack, but I have been dosing vodka for 6-7 weeks now and am going to pick up my first anemone today. Should I cut back on the vodka, or just continue the process as I have been?

thanks.

I have stopped dosing for a couple weeks now and all of the nems are back to normal except the rbta which is recovering slower. Im sure he will be fine at this point however.

I still am not a hundred percent sure it was the Vodka addition or something else. The decline started shortly after I started dosing V and since I have stopped they have recovered so it is deffinately a possibility as no other changes have been made. Perhaps dosing all at once caused the problem.

I will likely try again in a few more weeks and will report back with the results.

I would not change your current schedule for the nem if your tank is doing well. If its not broke....

hmmmm, maybe i'll try dosing half in the morning and half in the evening. I would hate to have my first nem die from dosing too much vodka at once.

After 9 months of vodka dosing I lost a Sebae Anemone that had been in captivity for over 5 years....I can't prove it was the vodka, but I suspect it was. For what it's worth, I ramped up on the vodka slowly and dosed multiple times per day so to avoid adding too large a dose at one time.

i have RBTA and a GBTA i started dosing about 3 mts ago, but i never dosed the full amount. They seem the same, the RBTA has been bleached since before i started dosing but the other one is perfectly fine

glad I saw this thread. I too have noticed the nems don't like the vodka dosing. I think I'd better cut back and do it gradual throughout the day.
