vodka dosing.....

So I know there's plenty of threads on this topic but I want to hear it from the locals. Who's dosing vodka? Do you still dose vodka? If not what happend? I'm researching alot on the topic and would appreciate anyone's input.

I used a mixture of vinegar and vodka in my 30. I started out with just vinegar, then added the vodka later on to round out the potion. Works really well, but you have to start super slow, and you can't let your alk get above 8. Anytime my alk went past 8, you could instantly tell. Most SPS were p-o'd, and I would get the classic "burnt tips". My birdsnest were very sensitive to the changes in alk while carbon dosing as well.

I think it works wonderfully. It works better for nitrate reduction than phos. It will allow you to keep a heavier fish load as well. I had 12 fish in my 30 and my SPS looked awesome. Nitrates were below 5 and I would keep phos below 0.05 with a little GFO (2-3Tbsp).

There's a great write-up on the vodka dosing. Vineger is just 8 times weaker. Vinegar is gentler and less room for error and there is less associated cyano. I was also adding a drop or 2 of MB7, something I picked up from Nick (Blueline).

My current tank is set up for carbon dosing, but I'm not doing it because its not needed at the moment. I do have a third doser and container already set up for it in case I decide I need it.

I do vodka, vinegar and sugar works great great results i have alk at 9 and calc at 460 and no burn tips on sps cause i only dose 2 ml per day for total water volume of 220 gallons, try it you will love it

now is this for sps only or could be use for all other corals. lot of my corals are shrooms torch hammer and zoos

Quick question why does the alk swing when dosing vodka? And does it go up or down mine stays at 8 so I'm just wondering

Well not really but I would watch it carefully just in case. If your corals like the change alk may drop as demand goes up. If they don't, they may stall and cause your alk to rise. Your corals will definitely be more sensitive to alk spikes while carbon dosing. They'll let you know immediately!

Edit: ok re-read and misunderstood. My alk swung because of external factors and the fact it was a 30 gal. One was due to cold snap. Another was a temp spike when I had workers in the house and had to shut down AC. Nothing to do with the carbon dosing.
