vodka dosing

I have been on R.C. for the past two days just cramming my brain with all the wonderful knowledge. Has anyone tried dosing on a 2 month old aquarium with just live rock and sand is it worth trying or even sugar?

There is an article in last monthes reefkeeping mag. that goes in to vodka dosing in depth.

IMO you should wait awhile yet if your tank is just 2 months in your nitrates are still coming down.

what are your nitrates and phos. levels?

I set mine up 6 weeks ago and started dosing after week one, and use prodibio. I now have over 70 corals in my 65 gallon, with 7 fish.

I think carbon dosing is wonderful, but I question why you want to -- it's natural for the tank to go through some cycles, and if you don't have anything in it but live rock and sand, how do you have excess nutrients that need removing?

Do you have a skimmer? Carbon dosing is for the most part pointless without a skimmer, allthough adding tiny amounts may help build up your helpful bacteria population if you are just starting the tank -- that may help your tank finish cycling faster.

Before you start dosing, read Eric Borneman's RK Mag articles on renewing sand beds and vodka dosing. He is very knowledgeable and I have found that taking what he says to heart will save you a lot of headache. If something sounds to good to be true, it is.

70 corals in 6 weeks? I sincerely hope it works out but don't you think you are rushing things. Nothing in a reef tank happens fast, except disaster.

Take everything you read in forums with a grain of salt, including what I have to say. Listen to the experts like Eric. Go with practices that last the test of time. Vodaka, along with many other methods come and go. I recently did much research and vodka may not be very good long term. Decreased biodiversity being the largest negative in my mind. Read as much as you can about it. Good Luck!
