vodka dosing

Can someone please explain vodka dosing to me in layman's terms? I saw it mentioned in another thread and i want to know about it. Like what is the purpose? What are the side-effects or potential dangers? I saw where it said 1.5 to 3 oz is the amount to dose but surely that isn't for all size tanks. How much would you dose a 55 gallon mixed reef with a few SPS and LPS and several clams? Thanks!
