Vodka in your fishtank?

Does anyone add vodka in your tank or anyone heard of it? I've seen claims of it lowering nitrate and eliminating diseases when added tiny bits a day.

I don't --- no need for me.

But, from my understanding it does lower nitrates by giving the bacteria an additional carbon source which increases their numbers.

As for it eliminating diseases, I don't see how that is possible.

You definitely want to do your research if you choose this method, as there have been many incidents of people who didn't know what they were doing overdosing and causing very serious issues. In my opinion, there are better methods, but the science behind it is sound, and it has proven effective.

+1
I would wait to try vodka until you're confident that:
a) you have a well-established, stable tank, so you can definitely attribute any changes to the vodka,
b) you know your tank well enough to spot subtle warning signs that something is going wrong, and
c) you're comfortable with the calculations and strict dosing regimen that vodka requires.
