Vortech Battery Backup Cable Length

I ordered a battery backup before vacation and did not really look at the size or all the specs. The back up is much larger than I thought but the cords that connect to the Vortech pumps are much shorter than I expected. Can I cut the cord to extend the length? If so how many feet can I extend the cord before there is an detrimental impact?
