VorTech MP10 or MP40?

I am putting a tank together and I think I want to add a VorTech powerhead. I cant decide if I should get the MP10 or the MP40. The tank is a 40g Breeder (36x18x16) its will be a mixed reef so I am not sure how much flow I should have, I will already have around 8-10X from my return pump. I would rather get the MP10w to save some money but by itself it may not be strong enough. I do have a Jebao WP-25 (I think its a 25) that will be in as well. Do we think this would be enough flow in the tank to have the MP10 at 75-80% and then the WP-25 on as well? Or would 1 MP40 suffice? Either way its gonna put me in the dog house with the wife :spin3:

I have a 50 gallon breeder that is mostly SPS with two wireless mp10s and I honestly wish I went with one MP40 and one MP10. I might end up buying a third mp10 to put on my backwall to get full coverage.

I'm not sure about the flow from a WP25 but I run my two mp10s at 100 percent reefcrest on antisync mode. With a mixed reef I think you might be able to do one mp10 and one WP25 if it has similar flow to an mp10.

If money is a concern I would look at the new jebao pumps. I hear they work well and are a lot cheaper than an mp10. Happy wife happy life.....

maybe two WP25s and JB wave controller if you want to save some money. I had a 58 gallon with similar footprint, one MP10 was not enough.

Yea I would look into them but I am wanting this tank to look at clean as possible. Id love to do 2 MP10w's but she would kill me lol

The Jebao WP25 I have says its 800-2000gph, do you think if you would have had a pump like this long with the MP10 it would have been enough? I might just spend the extra $100 and get the 1 MP40 if that will be enough for the tank

I ran 2 mp10s on my 40 breeder which was sps dominant and they did great. I recently upgraded tanks and wasn't able to use the mp10s due to the thicker glass so now I have 2 collecting dust in my closet. If you plan on upgrading down the line (which most eventually do) it'd be nice to have a pump that will already work versus shelling out the money for 2 new 40 quiet drives like I had to. If you get the mp10, I'd run the jebao with it but if you grab a mp40, it will likely be more than enough flow. Having 2 powerheads is nice for turbulent and chaotic flow but if you can get the returns flow directed into the mp40s flow you should be set.

My thought is,
Get the 40 you can always turn it/them down. Plus there applicable for an upgraded tank. The mp10 is a awesome pump, but I always feel in these cases if your on the fence about a piece of equipment, buy a tad bigger, then run the unit on the lower end of its design it should last a long time.

Again just my 2cents.

If I got the MP40 I could probably run it on its lowest, or close to, setting since its rated for a much larger tank than mine right?

So I am going to have a sump by Trigger Systems slightly customized. I am doing the Emerald34 design but with Dark Blue Transparent 2424 acryilc instead of green. Because os spending a little more than I planned I am going to go with th MP10 and buy a second later on down the road. I honestly wont be upgrading to a larger tank within the next 5 years so I think this should suffice.

MP-10. The new MP-40 is a beast of a pump. Look up BRS's video of the difference in flow between the old MP-40 vs the new MP-40.

I have a pair of MP10s on my 38g (36x12x18) mixed reef. I run them in long pulse mode, anti sync to create an alternating gyre. At 90ish %, they are good for my tank. If you plan on going for a gyre, then MP40s will give you more leeway, but the 10s will probably do the trick. If you want some sort of random or alternating flow (rather than a gyre), the 10s should be just fine.

Good advice.

MP10s are easy to outgrow. 40s are much harder.
