VorTech Power Heads

Im starting to look at them as an upgrade. Not sure which ones to get. I read one review saying two MP-40s was to much for a 120 gallon. That is the size I have. Would two MP-10s work good for a 120 mix reef?

I believe you will find that most folks would recommend two MP40s for a 6 foot 120. As a matter of fact, some people may even steer you towards Tunzes for that tank as their flow generally 'reaches' further into the tank. Considering you are keeping a mixed reef, two MP40s would work great, and MP10s would not be enough, IMHO.

I have a 6' 210g and bought 2 MP-40's about 3 weeks ago and I think they are good for a 6'tank. MP-10's are definitely not enough.

I would say you must get 2 mp40s or you wont have enough flow period. You could use one mp40 and some other pump on the other side but either way your gonna want more flow than 1 mp40. Just for ref I have 2 mp40 on my 60 gal and yes its to much flow but I have them turned down to 60%. I had 2 mp10s turned on full blast before and felt it was lacking.

I have 2 MP40 on my 4ft. 120 and I supplement those with 2 more Tunze 6045.I say you need 2 MP40 for 6ft. tank.

mp10s imo are meant for nano tanks only. 2 mp40s will be good for your system. i run one on my 4 ft tank at about 80% and my reef/fish are happy.

2x mp40 is the right amount of flow. Keep in mind they are adjustable and won't be maxed out all the time. With adjustable pumps there is no too much.

I think we have same size of tank, mine is 120g with 6 ft. long.

Left side MP40 (bought in xmass 2011 - 70% of power becuase of noise level -this is the max noise level I can tolerate) - wave (wide) can reach middle of the tank, so 1 MP40 for 6ft is not enough

Right size Tunze 6020 (use half of the power - almost silent) - wave (narrow) can reach the other side the tank

Thanks. Are they that noisy? I don't want to go with something that is. It is a tough decision as they are not even close to being cheap. There seems to be allot of people selling them used. Wonder why.

+1 on the above. The only reason I got rid of mine is because I am going to a closed loop on a bigger tank and I will be adding a couple of Tunze for more directional flow.

sorry to barge in with a question. I have a 6 for long tank built in the wall and is viewable from both sides. Im interested in these pumps but I have a big overflow at one end and so I cant mount one on that end(unless the outside of the pump is water prof) so would one mp40 be fine with different pump supplementing from the other end?

A MP60 will push water 6ft, just do one of those

I think some people have even done MP40 + MP60 on 6ft tanks

The reason you see them for sale used is there resale value is so high. When people are in need of some cash the first thing they think to sell is the vortech.

A single mp60 would cover your whole tank.

Curl58,

I do not like Noise (my tank is almost silent), all my equipments are in basement. MP40 is noisy to me if I turn the power on > 70%.
I posted a wrong model of Tunze, it should be 6205. The wave come from MP40 is very nice - wide and soft. I would like to get another MP40, but I love my Tunze 6205 because it is silent !
