I see used ones for sale all the time and I assume that ppl keep asking for manufacturing date because they go out after time. How often do they go out and how long do they last before problems start?
They actually last a very long time. I think that most people ask the manufacturing date because it tells them what upgrades can be done to them. Ecotech is constantly updating the pumps and the newer it is the easier it is to get updated parts for them.
Whichever you get, it should work so long as the magnet on the wet side is still in good condition. To check the magnet just remove the backside of the wet side, it is a super easy thing to check. I would also ask the seller to show it in operation. I much prefer a wet pump than a dead pump.
AFAIK, people only ask for the manufacturing date to know if they're still under warranty (1 year). If you're looking for a used one, try to get a QD (Quiet Drive) model. After experiencing QD, I would never buy one without QD.
Definitely get a QD.. I've had good service from Ecotech. I bought an old MP40 WWD and it was LOUD! I have a 4000sq/ft house and bedroom is across the house on the second floor and at night I was able to hear that thing humming from there. I upgraded to the QD driver and it turns out because of the age, the dry side wasn't compatible. I called Ecotech and they sent me out a new dry side to exchange out for $1. Doesn't get much better than that. The pump is super quiet now and works like new.
That'll be the upgrade for a WES model. Depending on which size you get of Vortech, I believe the price goes up slightly. For the WWD I had, I bought that driver plus the RF module for the upgrade.
Treated properly the dry side and controller will last a long time, but the wetside does need periodic maintenance. That's another reason to ask for the manufacture date.
