Vortech question

I have the MP40W, which I helped set up on a few tanks so I know how they work, but never actually used it in my tank. Now I see they have the MP40ES or something.

Can the two be used in unison or can you not mix and match models? I mean, what's the difference? I see it's another $100 to upgrade the W to an ES.

Thanks

Before I upgraded my w to a w es they did seem to communicate. It might only be in compatible modes though

They work together but the new modes on the ES dont work on the W I think.

This is my understanding also. The new controller is definitely an improvement over the old one there is about a dozen extra programming features as well. Things like automatic wave tuning, duration of night mode, duration of feed mode etc.

I thought the es was wireless and the regular w wired ... Wonder if the es can do both. I'm running two es wireless, very happy otherthan the bill which got here yesterday!

looks like they can talk as long as you have a "W" - however, only in the old modes:

In order of inception:

MP40 (only speed controllable, identified by a metal box)
MP40w (first to feature the Wireless Wave Driver, often called Gen1's, these are identified by a magnet with a clear plastic coating)
MP40w Gen2 (upgrades included a plastic coated magnet, plastic screw and plastic nut and some firmware updates)
MP40w ES (featuring the EcoSmart driver, these are the latest with an all new driver and box, more water resistant, more modes, better master/slave interfacing, on/off switch.

I have a pair of MP40W.
I am interested in the new modes that the ES model offers.
Can I upgrade my master driver and have the ES modes on
my MP40W slave?
Thanks

answer:

They will speak with one another in the classic modes but not in the new ES modes. To do that you'll need two ES drivers.

Any pump can be upgraded to an ES model by purchasing an EcoSmart upgrade kit available at our website. Any older pump out there may benefit from a replacement wetside, or at least a wet side rebuild kit, because you never know how the previous owner maintained their pump.

I highly doubt there's any Gen1's out there for sale that haven't already been upgraded so I wouldn't worry too much about that.

My MP40W is Gen 2 BNIB, and I'm not certain I'm even interested in the increased adjustability, but what do I know. Haven't seen the new ES or monkied with it. For my new tank's proposed flow scheme, I'm going to shoot for getting a second one, but looks like the ES is what's available.

I mean, I was more than happy with my Tunzes, they did what I needed. Didn't really see the need for anything more than what they could do. If I was doing another 6 foot tank, I'd just use those again. But, for the new tank's layout, Vortech's get the nod. Seems a shame. Those friggin Tunzes were $700+ new, and now I'll be lucky to get $250-300 for em. Same thing happened with my 8 track and Betamax.....
