vortech vs tunze?

i'm trying to figure out what to buy. I have a 135 BB tank with a closed loop/spraybar at bottom. Using seio's at this time. I'm trying to keep sps.

What is the reason why I should choose a vortech pump? How many would I need?

My head is spinning from reading each products forums. Any advice please!

Also where to buy, new or used? controllers? non controller?

I love my vortechs. They are amazing. They take up very little room and from reading this forum quite often, they have superior customer service. I set mine up a little over a week ago and they are very quiet and work well.

Well this topic has been covered to death, but IMO the Vortech is definitely your best bet. You have much more flow control, plus the new wireless wave driver which gives you infinite possibilities for control. You will not be adding any heat to your aquarium at all, a big + if you ask me. And don't forget a BIG positive, the battery backup!

As for quantity, you probably only need 1 for a 135g but you may want to go with 2 just to have the ability to create waves, more random flow, etc.

And for your last question where to buy it, any of the big online stores carry them (Marine Depot, Premium Aquatics, etc.). I believe that they only come with the wireless controller now and you can't purchase (new) one with the old style controller, but you should get the wireless one anyway.

I would go for 2 in a 135. Flow will not get to the far end with one pump. I love mine because of the low heat signature, battery backup(an accessory), now every new pump comes with the wireless controller, wider dispersed flow than the Tunze, smaller footprint in the tank. Downsides vs. the Tunze no moonlight or night flow options like the 7095 controller has. Food mode does not completely turn off the pumps making target feeding tougher. That's it.

i am running 4 on my 135. one on each side in pulse on a timer to turn off at night; 2 on back wall in reef crest on battery backup

I would not choose a vortech over a tunze stream 6100. The stream will produce a longer flow pattern, never stall, and will not rust. The only thing the vortech has going for it is the size and no cord in the tank. I have both in my 180gal SPS tank, and they have been running for 2 yrs. The vortech has been in and out of service many times for stalling. Also, if you look through the boards here you will see that the unit will rust. I bought it for the battery backup.

You should also ask in the Tunze forum to get comments.

My honest opinion/experience:

I've had both and by far prefer the Tunze. Much quieter (the noise of the Vortech was a show stopper for me), I like the Tunze controller better, although I wish it had the anti-sync like the Vortech. Visually, the Vortech is smaller on the inside of the tank, larger on the outside. I have to say for my installation, the pump and cord on the outside of the tank was worse looking than the Tunze setup. The Tunze is more flexible in positioning. flow wise, I liked the Vortech better. Lots of nice wide flow. Support wise, both are top notch.

You have to weigh the pros and cons of each and see what works better for your needs.

I have my vortech for 6 months and have never had a problem. It gets great flow, easy setup, easy to clean and the only noise I can hear is a very soft hum when it is on max flow but it is nothing significant. It stalled once when the dry motor was accidentally knock out of alignment, but it can right back when it was realigned. I would recommend it to anyone that asked.

I have both and would have to say tunze. I have to adjust my vortech frequently, and sent it in for repair within 30 days of purchase.

i bought two used 6100.10's with a 7095 i think, controller. For those of you who have these, any suggestions on setting up the controller? i've got sps frags in a 135 tank i put the tunze on the sides in front of the overflows on each end. Facing the tank, the left on is pointing toward the back and the one on the right is pointing toward the front. Trying for the gyre effect i read about. But i do need some advice on the controller.

The two best features of the vortech over the tunze is the wider flow pattern and the smaller size.

The customer service for tunze is top notch. In fact, they are so good they send you the parts before you even send yours back.

My vortech keeps jumping off the glass and I have to send it back so we'll see how service is for Icecap.

Tunze has their own forum. You should probably post this question on their forum and not Ecotechs.
