It finally happened, the one event I feared most since I began keeping mantis shrimp. I got hit on my right index finger by a 4" Smithii mantis this morning. You know what? It was not bad at all. It startled me more than anything, it felt like getting hit by a rubber band. The pain went away after 10 min.

For all of you folks out there scared of your mantis, it is not the end of the world.

I have mine living in my 55 gal reef tank. He is a good citizen, I feed it a piece of table shrimp 2 times a week and he is very well behaved; he has not hurt any of my fishes.

lol

same thing happened to me a while back.

figured it was no big deal, and wasnt as wary after that.

sometime in june homie got me again with his "sickle"

now that left a mark:eek2:

It seems like every few months I warn people about allowing stomatopods to strike them. The CDC posted this recently. There are nasty things that live in aquaria and you do not want to be in contact with them while having a wound.

lol guys, be happy Dr. Roy's pic failed. Ive seen it before and it isn't pretty. Heed his advice, an open wound in a tank invites all sorts of microbial nasties.

on a side note, I got careless one day and my peacock gave me a warning shot that left my finger (gloved) numb for half an hour... not fun at all. Im just thankful he didn't decide to do any more damage than that

I was hit by my small chiragra at work........................but more recently stung by a lionfish!
