despite some major issues:
* amp3k return leaking and then failing
* a tunze 6100 impellor breaking
* about 50lbs of sand clumping into solid rock
* discovering monti eating nudis

and a few minor issues:
* kalk reactor tuning
* trying a different phosphate media
* battling low PH (7.7) due to colder temps

the system perseveres. with the failed pumps, i'm down about 5000gph and have a few frags fighting stn :mad:.

enjoyin' it while i still can with fingers crossed :rolleyes:

Hey Tim,

Your tank's worst day is better then the my tank's best day.

What type of pump failed? I have a Sequence Dart that you are more than welcome to borrow for how ever long it takes for you to replace your pump.

Minh

thanks guys. i think i'm getting burnt out on it and all the time and money every month to replace/repair this and that. i'm taking a hands off approach for the next few months and will do only routine water changes.

one of the most annoying things is when the tunze alarms would activate at 4am. its a rude awakening and ruins your day :(

minh, it was a dolphin ampmaster 3000 that leaked and luckily i had just gotten home from a volleyball game that night and caught it. but still, it made for a long night...cleaning it up and re-routing my mag 9.5/Uv loop as the new return. and then having to adjust the skimmer levels based on the reduced flow and worrying about them overflowing during the night as things settled. argh...it never stops.

I think the hands off approach may be the best remedy. I would bet the minute you start getting rid of some of your stuff and loose some of those pieces, only to have to track them down again would regret it!! Tim, you have a really great collection there that would be a shame to see get parted out. Stick in there!!! We all go through months where this hobby just sucks and sucks your time, energy, and money....only to have it happen months and months at a time.......whenever that happens I think of the tank I want and will have.....Or just change the rock around and presto......new tank!!!

BTW.....having a small nano like I just put up helps a lot......its kinda mini vacation from the finicky SPS to go the the "easy" stuff.

sps

sps

Those are really pretty and the colors are astonishing. When will your sps be ready for fragging? First dib for pink lemonade :D

Hey Tim,

Sorry to hear about the turn of events Bud. Hang tough Dude. Take a brisk ride in the cold...even a little rain......sounds counter-intuitive, but it works for me!

Hang in there! I still remember couple years ago when I visit your house and experienced the tank first hand, that was one of the best tank I have ever seen. I might need to pick up some frag from you too, just hang in there!

Nice pics! The kalk reactor should help with your low pH, I added a Geo that runs with my ATO that circulates 4 times a day for 15 minutes that helped my ph from 7.8-7.9 to 8.1-8.3 now...
Also what causes sand clumping?

Great pics :)

One question, what makes you belive that lower temps equal low PH?

Typically in winter, people keep their doors/windows closed and heat in. This leads to higher CO2 levels, thus lowerring a tanks PH. Other then that, low temp IMO/IME don't drive PH down. The one thing lower temp does mean, is a higher DO saturation point (good thing).

nuuze - the ph is still bottoming out between 7.78-7.79 and i'm prolly not evaporating enuf water with the cooler temps.
honestly, i have no idea why the sand clumps and turns to rock. still investigating that one :(

gresh - thats exactly what i meant. low temps --> low PH by closing the windows, staying indoors more and having the house heater going :(

tonight, i might try running an outside air feed line for the skimmers to combat the low ph. yet another evening of tinkering :hmm3:

wee-reef - only spin classes at the gym or the garage trainer for now. don't know if its the weather, holiday stress or life in general but i'm having a hard time conjuring up the energy :worried:

Maybe try leaving your stand doors open so the sump can get fresh air and maybe a clip-on fan...

It's the household air (closed windows/doors=higher Co2), not what is inside his stand ;)

We also have a Barracuda that you are welcome to as well, for as long as needed. Before AEFWs we had a couple of frags that made their way through other reefers into our tanks, so it is the least we could do to "give back" a little bit. Just let me know and I could meet up and get it to you.

Sorry for your pain. I've imagined such nightmares and alarms as I plan on upgrading.... Nonetheless, you post some of the most amazing photos. Your corals appear very colorful and amazing.

Good luck.
