Did anyone catch this on MTV last night? All I can say is HAHAHA.
His arrogance shines every time as well!

Wait, what? Walt Smith? As in the coral farmer? I'm terribly confused. I'm the MTV generation but I don't watch that crap.

The name of the show is Parental Control. Parents try to fix there kid up with a new Boyfriend/girlfriend. come one Danny you don't watch MTV ;)

mtv is a rarity in my apt...if the television is on, it's most likely on fox soccer channel (or espn/2/golf channel/national geographic channel/history/discovery/discovery times/science channel).

i've heard of the parental control show but if i do watch mtv, my allegience lies with the show, 'yo momma'. -- just kidding! that show is horrible... i mean, does anyone even tell 'snaps' anymore? that was, like, 10 or 11 years ago when that was popular. lol. silly fez.

No, as in the "Magical Mystery Mud" purveyor.
I don't think he farms corals anymore.

Really? I know he still farms artificial live rock. The aquarium has about 2 tons of it in their reef tank.

Yeah, so does PetCo

I cant beleive that stuff is actually considered live rock. I spent a good while examining that stuff in PetCo, seein how Ive never seen "Walt Smith" live rock before, and in my honest opinion it looked just like lava rock except it had a Walt Smith tag hanging off of it

wait, petco carries live rock?! lol. man, my gf works at the arden petco but i didn't know they carried anything like that. crazy.

That's odd. I've looked at several large pieces of it (like, literally, a ton of it :D)and it looks fine to me. Maybe there's a difference in how it was handled after distribution.

The live rock you buy at PetCo is the same live rock you get from Walt Smith. Just different label on the box. I seen them shipping the boxes of rock with petco labels on them from his (Walt Smith) LA distribution offices. And, yes Walt Smith still farms corals. I actually talked with him briefly when I was down in LA.

I was looking at that live rock last night, lots of pods but they all are the same shape and who knows what petco puts in that water, they probally think the pods are ich and add copper.

There was nothing fine about this batch, every piece was almost identical Im wondering if he had an aquacultured aragocrete brand of LR? But I wasnt being overly exagerating either, it was even a rusty red color.
And Pico if were talking about the same store on Auburn and Greenback, that rock has been there for over 6months now, it aint selling, but for the longest time the only difference I noticed was a smidge of coraline, but not even a lil feather duster worm, nothing! The pods prolly were seeded from the substrate, not the rock I saw that stuff a week after it came in, and I thought it was a joke or I was missing something.... Id bet money it was how it was handled at PetCo. He wouldnt be in the business of selling LR if it was always like what I saw im sure. Not trying to flame though, just relating to an earlier comment.

Walt showed some slides on his rock and how he makes it at the WMC. He also told me that the hole in the rock was specified by Petco so they could attach a bar code label for scanning.

Based on what I've seen at my local Petcos, it doesn't seem to be a big seller. You can't fault him for trying to mass market his product.

He claims that his piles of manmade rock have more fish around them than the natural reefs. He suspects that the holes provide a lot of hiding places for small fish.

Best of luck,

Roy
