If anyone wants a mangrove or 2, i will be ordering 10 from a guy in the livestock fs forum. It works out to about 10 bucks each shipped. Pls LMK. thanks, alan

Nope, they're not. It's illegal to harvest the pods in FLA, that may be what your confusing (and what a few threads on RC have been about).

I've seen them in a lot of LFS's, so I don't think they're illegal.

Ever seen Leopard sharks, many different fw plants, caluarpa, baby red ear sliders, etc. in LFS :D I don't think what people sell in a stores should ever be a litmus test for what's legal or not ;)

FYI, do a search on ebay and you'll find you can get 25 mangrove pods for about $21 shipped - so less than a buck a piece.

I've ordered from Hawaii before and they are on par of what I've seen elsewhere. Most of the pods had leaves already. They also have pics on the auction.

On the auction I viewed, they were selling red mangrove pods. I order from these guys about 3 years ago and was happy with what I received.

Alan, I would follow reefboy1's suggestion. I've also ordered mangroves from eBay, and I received 10 pods with leaves and roots for under $20. I gave up on growing them in my office so I gave them to Jose. Where are you going to be setting up your mangroves in your system?

Thanks for all your input--always learn a better way to go about doing things from these boards. I will pass on these larger 'groves and buy the pods as reefboy1 suggested.

Hey Charles--I was planning to put it either in the sump or fuge, but i can only handle 4 or 5 at the most.

I've read somewhere that mangrove doesn't do a whole lot in nutrient up take, at less one puts in 10-20 of them. Did I miss anything about mangrove in the past year, is there new data suggest otherwise?

africangrey, you're correct there. There's no way a mangrove is going to compete against macroalgae in regards to nutrient uptake. In the time a mangrove grows a new leaf, you could have a few pounds of chaetomorpha on your hand. I think the main reason people have them is that they're a beautiful plant with interesting characteristics. Once they get bigger, their roots could shelter organisms for the refugium or tank, but as a filtration source, they'll never compete too well against macroalgae or a skimmer.

Mangroves are definately great for adding some flare to your fuge ;)

isn't it known that mangroves growing off the shores are places where some marine animals lay their eggs?
