Want to buy a SLR Camera, need advice.

False Percula Clown, taken with same camera and settings. You'd probably get the same results with the 18-55 EF-S kit lens.

Really Nice, thats exactly the kind of Photos I hope to take one day! Thanks for posting them Agrusczak.

The last two images are a bit fuzzy - try selecting a single AF point and your shots will come out a lot better.

Something like this:

By the way, if you want to get an SLR, know this: There is a much steeper learning curve than point and shoot cameras. For most people, it may be a few weeks before you start to see a significant improvement. For others it may just be just days.
Take your time and don't get bogged down in buying more lenses till you understand what they are for and you can afford the good stuff. Don't compromise - you will just end up upgrading eventually.

For most people, the Rebel XT along with 18-75 IS lens is an excellent combination.
A preferable alternate is the Rebel XT with kit lens and a Tamron 28-75/2.8 lens - that will give you a "fast" lens for freezing motion with kids easily.

I can recommend it either combination highly but I would personally prefer the second one.
Cheers!

Awesome coral shots!

Part of the challenge I have run into with taking shots of the fish is that they don't stand still for very long. However, I will give the single AF point setting a try.

Single AF setting + High shutter speed + appropriate aperture (depending on Depth of field you want image to have)

Sometimes that means high ISO and noise but most newer DSLRs deal with high ISO noise so well, you really have nothing to fear by shooting at ISO 800.

Cheers!

is a great place to get info on digital cameras. i personally use nikon only. imo nikor lenese are the finest quallity lenses made. there are alot of nice compact digitals out now for around $300-$350.00

You truly need to go out and personally try all the cameras mentioned above in your hand a see what feels best to you..... don't worry to much about Brand vs Brand. They are all capable of taking good pictures. Look at button settings/location, menus, options, etc. Navigating around you Digital SLR is important and you might find that some cameras will work better for you than others. Just something to think about.

Thanks, I will do that. I am really thinking compact at this point. If I get one and it takes great Macro pictures then it's mine! If it does'nt it will become my wifes Birthday present ;)

I do! The AE-1 Programmable was my 1st camera!! I wish I still had it, it was stolen!

As far as what DSLR? I own the canon 20D, for the most part I love it. I was disappointed in the images until I spent $1,000 for an L series lens and the 100mm 2.8 macro ROCKS! I might get the RebelXT now, it was not out yet when I got mine.

Talk about parallel lives. My first camera was the AE-1 Programmable and it was stolen from me too! Now here's where it gets really weird...I now own a Canon 20D AND I've been saving my pennies for the 100mm 2.8 macro. Does this mean I'm destined to spend $1000 on an L series lens next? Oh well, if I must!
