New tank "“ and my first sump! If I wanted to transform my 20 gallon sump to a refugium, what kind of lighting and other equipment would be required? Also, am I correct in that the protein skimmer goes in the first compartment ? Tanks for all the great information I find here.

Yes, most people prefer the protein skimmer to be in the first compartment to expose it to the "dirtiest" water coming into the sump. That's if it's and in-sump model, of course.
You'll need a 75W fluorescent bulb (I prefer the crisp white CF) and a holder from Home Depot or Lowes, or other small light source. 6 sheets of glass cut for baffles, and a tube of GE I Window and Door Silicon (without bio-seal). And about 3 hours to put it all together.
Here's mine (no insump skimmer though)
