Wanted to Share my new 25G Seahorse Setup

I won a pair of seahorses from www.dracomarine.org at our MARSH meeting this month and decided to setup a tank for them. The tank is still in the early stages but I hope to be adding the ponies in the next few weeks.

Take a look http://www.gotfrogs.com/seahorse.htm

what temps are you running just wondering cause the coral and the Catalina Goby.. Catalina Gobies need cold water but Coral needs warm water..
also that is a nice set-up.. what species of SH's did you win??

I have the tank set at 74 right now. I have had the gobies for about 6 months now and they seem to be happy, but I guess only time will really tell. I get to pick what type of SH to get. I wish I could get some of the colder water ones but Draco doesn't breed them. The corals are just in there because I have a ton of the stuff growing in my 120 and would rather put it in there than the trash.

am i wrong that i was told all horses originate from cooler temps. like 73-76 max. ? cooler temps are ideal right?

I keep a colt coral and both a yellow and purple gorgonian in my SH tank. The tank stays between 73 and 75 and the corals are doing great.

Some horses come from even cooler temps then that. Some actually come from much warmer temps. There are may species of seahorses with different requirements. As hobbyist we recommend keeping tropical horses in the 72-75F temp raise, temperate species need even lower temps.

Gotfrogs? Not yet but one day. :D

Your tank looks great. I'd go for erectus, but that's because that's what I want next. I have kept reidi for over 5 years, they are great but the fry is more challenging for me. Kuda are also very popular. All the horses there are good.

Good Luck choosing.

pledosophy- yep, I think I am going to get a pair of Erectus. From what I hear, they are one of the easiest ones to breed. THe young can feed off of baby brine from the get go.

I have a Redi and Kuda and all kinds of coral along with other fish and I set the temp at 78 to 80 and everybody gets along just fine in my 30gal.

Gotfrogs...

I've found that MOST Erectus fry will take BBS from day one. SOME Reidi fry, on the larger size, will too. Otherwise, you do need to start with rotifers in greenwater, and work up to the BBS in a couple/few weeks. It really all depends on the size of the fry.

I have one Reidi male who is large (7") but has a tight, small, pouch. He gives me LARGE fry but just a hundred or so at a time. My smaller male has a big ol' pouch that looks almost paper thin and he gives me over 200 fry per discharge. They are only 2/3 the size of the other male's. The first guy's offspring tend to take BBS within a couple/few days. The second guys "Tribe o' fry" don't take BBS for weeks.

If you want to really get into breeding...check out the Seahorse.org library. That's where I started and I'm glad I did....lots of good information and great people (Like Danu) to help.

Worse case scenario...you get all into it and start the habit of collecting and setting up dozens of lil' tanks and kreisel systems all over your house :)
