I hear that American Pro in Crystal River is doing it for $300.

At most dive shops you can try it out (it's called a "Discover Scuba" class) for around $50. In some places, it's free, or at least applied to the scuba course if you choose to go ahead and get certified.

There's also a resort course - an abbreviated course that won't allow you to really get certified, but it'll put you in the water with some gear so that you can have a little fun... Under close supervision.

...But I have to ask you - if you took skydiving lessons, would you also be looking for the cheapest instructor? The cheapest parachute? Not to be a jerk... But why would you seek the cheapest education when it comes to a potentially life-threatening activity? I mean, couldn't you cut corners somewhere else?

^^ I agree. Make sure you understand why one shop is less expensive than the other. If they are all teaching the same course, i.e. PADI, and they all use perfectly maintained equipment and have experienced instructors, then go with the least costly. Just make sure you are comparing apples to apples.

SCUBA is NOT cheap, yeah you can get a cheap class, but usually you get what you pay for. Are you planning on buying cheap gear, dont forget this is not simple snorkling equipment, this is life support. Or are you just going to rent all your gear, that gets expensive, and don't forget the boat fees. I used to tell people they can certified with their personal equipment (mask, snorkel, fins, gloves, blooties) class, pool session, open water check outs for about $1000 with good equipment. Yeah you can do it for less money, but your doing it cheap, not just inexpensive.
