Wanting to start a SH tank

Did some searches, I don't think dwarfs are good for me to start with. Some are saying Erectus are the best to start with? I would need a bigger tank, maybe 30g? I will have live rocks(1-1/2lb per gal?) and sand as my substrate. Read somewhere that I don't need a skimmer is that true? Do I use a regular HOB filter to run carbon? Weekly water change and will have chaeto in the tank also. Must maintain ph, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate level. Do I also test for anything else? TIA

I am going to watch this thread I was looking at starting a SH tank also and want to get some info from the experts here.

hello

hello

ill try to help ya, i have been doing alot fo research on seahorses...

Lets start by asking what type of tank setup you have...

The general rule of thumb is that you need to keep them @ 72-74 degrees, this means (most of the time) that you need a chiller.

UV sterilizer is also highly recommended although not necesary

You also need a way to regulate the water flow since you want to have AT MOST a 5-7x water turnover.

your tank should be AT LEAST 18 inches high for Erectus seahorses; which is the hardies of all the seahorses you can get.

and to answer your question... skimmers are not necesary, however it will improve your margin of error greatly and it will also help you not have to do weekly water changes RELIGIOUSLY

Hope this helps,

Estefano

P.S. if you have any questions ask away and I am sure someone will answer, just remember that the more specific your questions are, generally the more accurate your answers will be :)
