Warning For Clowns!!!!!

:( I just hopefully said goodbye to the last of the fish that were affected by the addition of a HYDOR DECO VOLCANO in my clown tank. I thought it would look real cool in there with the red light and some bubbly action. Little did I realize it was going to wipe out ALL my Picasso's (4) 2 purple firefish and 1tassled Filefish. Everything was so nice up until then. I was having a blast watching the new clowns racing around the tank ahead of the older inhabitants. Then I saw this blasted thing on a website and ordered it. Oh if I could only kick myself I would.

When I had removed the volcano, it had appeared to darken some more around the top edge. It does not smell like electrical stuff burning. Reading the side of the box it states it is non toxic resin but it is hand painted. Hand painted with what kind of paints? No where on the box does it state it is contraindicated for saltwater use. It says it is made in Europe- do they have stricter or lesser standards on these types of things than the U.S.?
Now I use Hydor pumps without any problems in my smaller tanks and R/O water tanks. I will have to try their magnum line to see if the magnet will actually stay in place on the glass on my 120g. I just was not sure where to post this except for the fact that I had lost so much enjoyment with my Picasso's' with their unique swim pattern- like a drunken fish:eek1: , the quirkiness of the file fish and the sprinting of the firefish. I just hope nobody else has the same fate that my fish had!

ps- Mandarin fish must be hardy little shavers! He is the only original fish left from the beginning not the least bit affected. He is still scooting about eating and doing 'his thing'.

Sorry to hear of your loss :(

I'm curious which website had that product listed with their marine supplies/decor. It is a freshwater aquarium ornament.

Are those not for smaller freshwater tanks? I am still just a newb, learing something everyday.
I am so sorry for your loss.

what leads you to believe that it is the volcano and not something else. the fact that the mandarin is still alive leaves me to believe that it may have been something else. perhaps food related as mandarins don't normally consume prepared food

Well I have been feeding the same food to all the fish in ALL my aquariums and this is the only tank that had experienced such a wipeout. Besides I have seen the mandarin nibble occasionally at the fare offerred to the others.
I am not looking for sympathy - Its nice that others are reading this and offerring their condolences, I am mearly warning other folks that may be niave as I was in purchasing this as it was not specified as to whether or not it was for fresh/salt water. I just really enjoyed watching these fish ,some were rather unusual looking, but they should not have died . Just stick to natural looking phenomena!

Hopefully the mods will allow this- Pet Discounters.com. They did not specify on the site either - just says for any tank!
