Washing filter socks?

options are :

power wash.

bleach [rinse well after]

or get a bunch, and exchange them, and when a bunch are dirty, do a load in washing machine, with no soap. I do 2 rounds, to get any soup residue out.

I have 2. Change it out, chunk it in the washer by itself no soap. Repeat

+1...although I use a little bleach.

I wash one while I use another so it's air drying for over a week before it's used. I was going to buy a bunch so I wasn't running the washer for 1 friggin' sock, but I haven't yet.

I always just turn it inside out wash it with the water hose, and then throw it in the wash machine with a little bit of bleach.

I take my socks outside and set my water hose sprayer to the JET setting. I spray the outside really good, then turn it inside out and spray again. Takes about 5 minutes to get it totally clean. I have also thrown them in the washer, but they tend to come out smelling a bit like fabric softner (even though I dont add soap or softner to the sock wash). I assume its residual from washer use, and I dont feel super comfortable putting them in the tank like that.

If you hang them it's not as bad...they dry out pretty quick. But then again I kept them in my basement. :)

I bought about 12 of them from bulk reef supply for $4.80 each,200 micron, I wait till a lot are dirty, toss them inthe wash with a little bit of bleach, and let air dry. they are great!!

I always turn mine wrong side out and wear it in the shower like a sock cap. Comes out squeaky clean just like me.:smurf:

Ffter 6 months of turning felt socks inside out and washing, I switched to mesh from BRS and it's so much easier to rinse out

thx for all the replies guys, just thinking if I can do this with filter socks can I also do this with media bags (e.g. the one holding carbon in my sump)?

with my filter socks i always just put them in the washer with 1 cup of bleach and put it on 2 rinse cycles. they come out looking brand new.

Yep, I wash mine once a week...I have at least a dozen of them that I rotate through. I use water and bleach in the washing machine, then I let it dry out for a few days so there's no chlorine residue. Never have had a problem due to it.

Another thing that works is turning them inside out rinsing it out and just hit it against either concrete or in ur shower floor and u see all the balck and brown from the filter run out, soak it again and repeat the process like 2 -3 times it works great for me. Only reason I do that is because if the lady catches me throwing it in the laundry , I wont hear the end of it.
