I take out about 4 gallons out of my 40 every month, but that is just to compensate for the frags I trade. So it's not intentional.

50 gallon SPS dominant tank with 35 gallons of actual water. Four small fish, a Yasha gobi, 2 black clowns, and a Splendid Dottyback. I change 5 gallons a week.

40 gallon breeder with 3 fish, 20g sump that really holds about 12 gallons. I think I have right around 50 gallons of total volume since a 40 gallon breeder isn't really 40 gallons. It is closer to 45-46.

I change about 8% every 2-3 weeks. I was changing water weekly for about 6 weeks but saw no difference and got tired of lugging RO water back from the LFS.

For those of you with nice reefs and less than 5% water changes what is the secret? Nitrate reactor, biopellets, carbon dosing, etc???

I'm not quite there for an eye popping tank, but will be there pretty soon. I do none of the above, but it is a bare bottom tank which I beliebe is helpful in exporting nutrients. I used to do 10% weekly and after seeing two very successful sps tanks in one week, that did once monthly and once every other week water changes I pushed back to every two weeks. In the week that I don't water change I take a hose and filter sock and vaccum detrius from the tank(sending the water into the sump).

My thinking on this method is it helps promote stability as opposed to the possible salinity or temp shifts(I know we try to avoid these but there is no perfect way to do a waterchange)
