Water change/RO

Do you folks match your cal, mag,kh or any of that in your Ro or saltwater for topping off or water changes?

i do not. i match temperature and salinity only.

occasionally i will test alk or cal in a freshly mixed batch, but generally they should be pretty good in newly mixed salt water. granted the best approach would probably be to test as many params as you can and match accordingly, but it shouldn't be a huge deal unless you're doing a massive water change.

Top off should be just plain water, no salt (water evaporates, not salt)

Only match salinity here, water I prepare sits at room temperature - I know a lot of people match temp, but I only do 10% every two weeks and 10% isn't going to fluctuate my temperature in my DT by much, last time I looked was like 1 degree drop.

It depends on what percentage of water you are changing. I don't bother with matching anything because the 25g water change has very little affect in a 400g system and the new water goes in a 150g sump before it gets to the DT. But in a smaller system where you might be changing 20% or more, some matching is a good idea. Also adding it to the system slowly can help avoid shock of sudden changes.

As stated above, top off water is RO/DI not saltwater. And most of the time it's such a small percentage of the total I wouldn't worry about the temp much. After all, your worried about the salinity or any other parameter.

Thanks for the info. I top off with ro in a 29 gallon tank. I was just wondering if you matched up parameters, if it would help keep it stable. I normally do a 5 gallon change. Going to upgrade to a 90 with a sump soon. Just wanting to learn all i can before the switch! This hobby is to expensive to be screwing up and killing everything!
