water change

when you guys do your water changes what do you do with the sand, do you siphon the top or you stir it all up and then siphon the water out to put the new one in ..

I don't do anything with the sand. I usually take a turkey baster and blow the rocks so that the gunk on them gets into the water column, then siphon out the water i am changing and put new in.

I don't do anything with the sand either. I used to clean it everytime I did a water change but was then advised not to stir anything up in the sand-bed because it is bad for the water chemisty, so I don't touch it anymore..

I run a deep sand bed, so I do not vacuum the sand. If you have less than an inch of sand it's probably ok to do so, but you'll be removing some fauna as well. If you use crushed coral, then you should be vacuuming the substrate at every water change.

My sand bed is about 2 -3 inches and I graze the top of it during my weekly wather change to get this nasty cyano that has developed. My tank is also only 3 months old, so hopefully after this is gone I won't have to touch it. What helped my sand out so far was the Super Tongan Nassarius Snails that I just added. They have been amazing
