Water changes during tank cycle

I've read a lot of different approaches for cycling the tank using cured/uncured live rock and all of them seem to recommend big frequent water changes.
My question is: does the water used for these changes need to be RO and prepared as if it was going to be used in an established tank? I ask because there's no way I will have containers to prepare up to 50% of the volume of my tank of 'clean water' every week or so. My tank is 125gal.

Alternative suggestions for cycling this tank are very welcome :-)

It's my understanding that you don't need to do water changes during a cycle anyway, because your water quality is going to be horrid for the first six weeks. But if you do want to do water changes, then yes, always introduce good clean RO water.

this girl owns an aquarium downtown and sold me some live rock and sand. she claims she uses conditioned tap water for all her tanks.

Thats what i was going to plan to do instead of going with RO water. I only have a 10gal though.

I supposed i could keep a 5 gal bucket of RO water handy maybe with a powerhead in it to keep it flowing?

too bad they dont sell experience!
