Hello...I am looking to upgrade my 56 tall to a 6' tank. Either a 150 it a 180. I guess I'm wondering if the 20% biweekly water changes are necessary with the bigger tank... thanks
all tanks need water changes, mainly because the life in our tanks suck the nutrients out of the water. Thats why a good quality "reef" salt is needed to replenish those nutrients. Small weekly water changes are the best way to keep your system stable. Bi-weekly water changes are good once your system has become "stable". By stable i mean older than 8 months. Water changes are the best way to prevent a LOT of livestock problems. Plus, it just makes sense, I mean think about it, would you want to live, poop, eat and roam around in the same water in a confined space? assuming you were a fish lol.
Bottom line, doesnt matter how big your system is, fact of the matter is all systems need water changes. Larger systems can withstand more problems than a smaller system and in the long run become more stable. Thats about the only difference of small vs large.
Hope this helps, get a china marker and mark your tank on the side out of sight with the date you changed your water and see how lazy or diligent you are about your changes it will open your eyes, did for me when I first started in salt.
I'm a big proponent of water changes, not for things you can test for, but for things you can't. If you can afford 20% bi-weekly water changes then go for it. If not, it probably won't crash your tank right away, so don't worry about it too much. I have a 120 and change about 25% every other week, sometimes every 3 weeks.
20% bi weekly is definitely NOT excessive. It may not be necessary but it certainly won't hurt and is a simple and proven way to instantly make your tank water cleaner.
