Less do these days. They are optional depending on experience and preferences.

To lower nutrients and add trace elements! Very cost-effective.

The ocean has water changes too! Corals consume trace elements and we need to do water changes to replace them and lower nitrates.

Of course, there are people who get away with not doing them, but they have to add those trace elements.
