Water Changes

I am starting up my 50-gallon reef tank and don't really know how to conduct a water change. How often should I do it and how do I prepare the new water?

I'd probably change 6-7 gallons at a time in that size tank, maybe only 5g, twice a month. I mix my saltwater up in 5g jugs from the fish store and aerate it overnight before using it. I make sure the SG match is close.

Then, just siphon out the old water, and pour in the new.

There are millions of opinions on how frequent and how much water to change, and there isn't much data on how often it's needed, really. That'd vary a lot from tank to tank, anyway.

10% weekly mix ur water in buckets with a powerhead over night and make sure it has the correct sg, ph, etc. as the tank

Here's my method...

I change 10-15% weekly.

1. Fill Rubbermaid Brute container with the desired amount of RO/DI to be used.
2. Add Instant Ocean salt to an approximate salinity of 1.026.
3. Allow water and salt to mix and aerate for 12-24 hours.
4. Bolster Calcium by 40ppm calcium chloride.
5. Re-test for salinity, with Refractometer, and adjust as needed.

Done. :)
