Water cleanup - opinions wanted

Just wanted to throw this out there and see what people's experiences with this were.

I have a 20L tank, so after factoring in water volume between the tank, remora skimmer and 18" aquafuge, I figure I have roughly 20 gallons of water in the system.

My bioload is, a bunch of corals, 1 6-line wrasse, 1 peppermint shrimp, 1 purple firefish. hermits, snails, conch.

With that said, here is the situation.
I have had a bit of the lazies lately. The last few months I haven't changed water much. I also, (duh) misread the directions on the DI resin bag and left it there for a full year. When I went to change out the filters on my RO/DI unit, I read that i had to change the DI resin after 500 gal, or when it turns brown (oops). (that explains the hair algae starting up, adn the cyano the last few months lol)

So, with wanting to clean up the tank and put in fresh saltwater, I was thinking about doing a few 8 gallon water changes.

My concerns are this:

with ~20 gal of water in-system, is an 8 gal change going to be too much of a shock?
Also, if i did these, according to rc.. after 5 changes i am at 92% new water, and 10 changes am at 100%. Could I do this every 2-3 days, or would it better to do a 1x per week change of this much water volume?

You can do a 100% change if you match everything properly, I've had to do it when my younger brother put stuff in my tanks. Just match temp, ph, alk, calc, etc. Can't be to careful.

ya, alk is way off currently. so i guess a 50% change would be better.. although in past wc's i usually do 20% and havent had a problem yet

Well main thing is making sure the water you change is similar (not exact) to the water your putting taking out.

I would advice doing 2 gallon changes once every day if you can until you reach 8 gallons. That would be safer.

Gl and I hope you learned your lesson you lazy a$$ bastard j/k :P
